I hate making stupid mistakes
« on: February 09, 2013, 11:59:20 AM »
I spent last weekend loading 45 auto rounds for my new 1911 , grabbed a box and off the range I went this morning , guess what ? They don't fit the mag . I must have been brain-dead for awhile and skipped the part were I check the OL of the rounds , now I have to run 200 rounds back through the seater to bump the bullets down about .030 . :-[ :-[ :-[ :-[

My wife's 1911 has a very tight chamber and a SHORT throat, i've learned after many screwups to chamber my first one to make sure and set the seating die. At least you can still use them and don't have to pull them though.

I have about 50 rounds in BPCR 45-70 loaded, only to Realize after i have them loaded and the powder compressed that i was too rough on the bases when loading and they're not at all accurate. I could pull those bullets and put new ones in, but i can't get the powder out, all i can do is shoot em

Well just finished the last 50 , what a PITA that was , did check them with 3 different mags too  :D they all fit now , maybe I can shoot next weekend , provided that nasty Work thing doesn't get in the way .

And by the way , I think that guy that said Handloading is Attention to Details was me , hopefully someone can learn from my mistake this time .  ;)

I have one of those "universal" .45 caliber seating dies from when I started using the hornady new dimension seating system over my lee dies seater on the few .45 caliber cartridges I shoot, and my favorite mess up is forgetting what I had in their last and jamming a bullet nice and deep into a case and saying to myself....  "that didn't feel like a crimp!" when I pack the powder down nice and hard.  Luckily that's one of those things that only happens on the first bullet and you know all about it!

i try to focus all my attention on
the loading chore and don't want any
kind of distraction while doing any
loading step. i loaded some .45's
a good while back and it was the last
or next to last i caught that i'd
overcharged them. i was sure glad
i caught my mistake that way
instead of the bad way.
a lesson learned.

These days focusing is harder and harder to do, even when I try really really hard. Guess its the oldtimers.

I got to checking my load log and found that the last rounds that I had used the seater for were some 45 Auto Rim , and with the bullets not needing to be seated so deeply I just forgot to re-ajust for the acp rounds . An easy fix , just a dumb mistake .  ::)

Count your lucky stars Stimpy!  When I load 45s I do so in lots of 5,000.  A couple hundred wouldn't be that big a deal in comparison.   ;D   I learned a long time ago to always drop an occasional finished round into an actual known tight chambered barrel I keep on the bench.  Now ya know why I keep that barrel on the bench.   8)   Before I started buying slugs from Missouri Bullet I either cast my own or bought from another supplier.  That other supplier once replaced some of their molds with some new ones that weren't exactly the same as before.  I discovered that little ditty a few thousand rounds too late once.  Keyword here is once.   ;)

AMEN! and AMEN!  I resemble that remark, plus I still have ten good fingers, two good hands, both good eyes, and everything in appropriate working order where the good Lord placed it.  I have character lines on my face and hands, a thousand yard stare in my eyes, and a mass of gray hair to prove I have been around this block a time or two.

Hi,

Here is a possible suggestion that might help,

Take an empty case and seat/crimp your bullet and set it aside in a bag with load info.  Whenever you then load with that same bullet, you will have notes and a proper gauge to set the seating die.  No more mistakes in seating.

It does mean that one of each type of bullet will be used with a case in a box on the shelf.  Just make sure that you remember to take notes.  Nothing better that grabbing a case and no notes  while scratching my head trying to remember just what did I load last time.....

I did something similar loading for my Ruger .270.  I loaded them too long.  I got to the range and tried to chamber a round.  The bolt wouldn't close.  When I extracted the round the bullet came out and was lodged in the throat.  I had to go home and punch it out with a cleaning rod.

About thirty years ago, I grabbed my 308 Norma mag by mistake and took out standard 308 rounds with me. I chambered the round, squeezed the trigger. What a surprise I got when I ejected the case! This case sits in plain view on my loading bench as a reminder. Thank God it was a Mauser!
