Rebore and chamber
« on: March 06, 2013, 12:16:41 PM »
I have a heavy barrelled .223. Can I have it rebored and chambered for 38-55 or .405?

No reason I can think of to cause you an issue, except expense possibly.  ;)

You would have to come up with a different extractor or modify that one too

the only limitiing factor is the depth of any screw holes in the barrel

there is a lot of disagreement on what the minimum thickness of steel required around the bore/chamber

some smiths won't work with a minimum of their own choosing.

I'd say, if you have 0.200 minimum over the chamber, you'll have no issues.

Why?  There are still .38-55 factory barrels and rifles around.  I'd just do some searching and waiting.  It's a lot cheaper.  The factory .45-70 barrel will outdo the .405 any day of the week.  If you've got money to burn, talk to Dinny about sending some to Wounded Warriors.

Maybe not so many in Canada tho.  :-\

Tim

Rawdog, gotta tell ya, love my 45-70. Have the 405gr Lee mold and it's great. I don't do much in the way of "target shooting". But this gun does hit what it is aimed at. Almost every deer I have shot with it, just fell down right there. Love the big bores. Have fun.

At the cost of that you should be able to find a bigger caliber complete rifle and sell the HB 223. Way money ahead in my calc.
