well to ask has any body welded a lug to a handy rifle barrel befor on here or is it a bad idea

yes

search it out, and you'll find some threads on it.

there were a couple companies offering stubs that they welded also, but I don't recall that coming to much.

on another site, there are plans floating around to machine a lug, then an explanation on a good welding technique for maximum safety.

it was complicated enough, that a non-welder/machinist would have trouble understanding it.

but the info is out there.

also, there are some who are D&Ting the lugs on. But I haven't heard any followup on the longevity for that technique.

i made the lug last week and was going to try tig welding it to a theaded stub and screw a barrel to it. and see how it goes

i see no problem if you v out the weld area then weld it to get max penetration.

what grade metal did you use for the lug

i fig the same as the barrel would be best so 4140. I see that the othe post that was in the link from quick was using 4130 i cant beleive it a big deal either way . should have the rest of the stuff for the project by the end of the week and warm air i could stand to be in the garage

I have welded several, no problems so far. just wrap the barrel up so as to let it cool slowly.I chamber the barrel after it is welded and fitted to the frame. What cartridge are you going to use?

i was planing on a 25 20 first and then maybe a a 30 carbine. and play with some lead bullets then on to bigger stuff

Since you are using a threaded stub are you going to make it a switch barrel ?

Be careful. Due to its high carbon content, welding 4140 requires a pre-heat and slow cool down in order to prevent cracking and over-hardening of the weld area.

plobly make another stube in stead of but doable either way ans as for the steel cracking or brittel is the tric. cat say that i have annealed a weld befor but have made welds so hard that filing is not a option

well during the week i tacked on a lug to a stub and fit to the gun and then welded it on now just clean up the weld a little and get on with a barrel

is that a co2 fluxcore weld? doesnt quite appear as solid wire and did you bevel the welded edge on the lug to have a larger area of weld? im working on the same thing so just inquiring on anyone elses experience and issues. Thanks

Looks like a good bead and all; doesnt matter what it looks like if it doesnt show when its closed up and stays stuck on there.

Nice project. I'm doing the same thing. I would have welded a lug to the new barrel except I want to preheat before welding and stress relieve after and my HT oven is ony 14" deep. I'm learning though that this method is a whole lot more work. Of course I knew that going in, but still...

And then I find out that I can buy a ready-made barerl stub (monoblock) for a Contender. Kinda makes me wish I owned a Contender instead of a Handi! Naw, just kidding.

slowly coming togather down to polishing the barrel and finishing the forend . shot it last week barrel stayed on so its a winner working up some loades
