356/358 rechamber, just asking...
« on: March 11, 2013, 09:05:14 AM »
So I got an 'extra' 357 barrel that fits an SB2.  I've been searching all the posts on converting to 356/358 to use both rimmed and rimless ammo and have a fair idea on what it is.  And Dinny's setup is out of my price range.  DIY is not an option, don't have tools.

If anyone has the time,  I'd like to know how/who can do the 356/358 rechamber right and reasonably, and advise me.  Please limit responses to this topic.  Already got 45-70, don't want a 35 Whelen, or 35 Rem.

Thanks.

Afternoon!

Well, the 357 is a good choice to go to the excellent 356/358 Winchester!

BUT, you dont want to be chambering this one by hand. Its too much material and too big a chance you make a tomato stake outta a perfectly good barrel.  SO.. you will need a smith or mechinist with a lathe to chamber this one for you.

A 35Rem extractor with a bit of careful grinding will make it a 356 OR 358.

You've got 95% or what you need...the barrel.  The reamer comes from 4D and doesn't cost an arm and a leg.  The .35 Remington barrel can be reamed by hand, ask cwlongshot, but the .357 has a bit more meat to come off and should be done on a lathe.  The only other glitch in the goodies is modifying a .30-30 extractor to handle both .356 and .358.  The .358 factor isn't really needed.  We load .356 brass to hot .358 in the Handi.  If the extractor worked only for the .356, it'd be fine.  You really don't need both.  jeepmann1948 knows lots about this subject and will certainly help a fellow Texan.  He should be along shortly.

CW mentions a .35 extractor.  I believe a .30-30 was used on mine.

Reamed a 35 Rem to 356 by hand.  Don't think I'd try a 357, as others said, to much metal to remove.  I modified the 35 Rem extractor by hand with a dremel, works great.  Have not had the chance to try 358 brass yet though.

Wayne York has done many. I have heard of a few complaints about his extractor mods, but not lately. Maybe he has refined his methods.

Thanks, Dinny

Dinny didn't mention it, so maybe it is sold, but he has a D&T stubbed .356 for sale... it is a great price and would be a higher quality firearm than the reamed factory... just though I'd mention it... it is in the classifieds. It needs the receiver, but if you sold your stock set and barrel, you would probably be further ahead and have a better gun...

I already have the stock, receiver and barrel fitted with Rem 700 sights.  Otherwise I'd be talking seriously talking with Dinny.  All I need is the rechamber.  Wayne's site lists the rechamber @ $100.  Very reasonable.  Thanks all for the advise.  When it's done, of course I'll be posting.

After all these Handi years pretty much realizing what I really want and can use.  This is one of them even if it's a specialty.  Might even be releasing a few of the others.
