Slug Gun in 20ga
« on: March 16, 2013, 06:52:12 PM »
OK, trying to get back into hunting deer after four years of divorce court.  Literally left four years ago with clothes on my back!  So my starting over with hunting guns.

Was thinking that a 20ga slug gun and a .50 cal muzzleloader would get me through this year til I can get funds up for a hunting handgun next year.  Top choice is a T/C Pro Hunter with both barrels.  Don't know if I can afford that this year.  Second choice would be a Savage left handed slug gun.  Handled them and really like them and the triggers.  Third choice is the H&R Deluxe Slugger.  All are able to take So IL deer out to 125 yards.

Am I crazy or vain to want to get the T/C, even if I can only get one barrel this year and the other next year?  Especially since the H&R is very accurate and very affordable.  Or just settle for the middle of the road Savage, even though its a great gun as well and a repeater.

Just wonder and thinking out loud.

After thinking about it, I could get the Pro Hunter with the 50cal x 209 barrel and use it during all the deer seasons.  Then get the 20ga slug barrel next year.

Still craving a good centerfire pistol but unless Freedom Arms has a coupon for 50% their Fire Sale, don't think its going to happen.  Should have never shot my friend's Model 97!

Haven't killed a deer with it yet but it did well on a coyote. Very accurate and you can get the other barrels later. I would go with the encore.

Nice rifle!
Does the raised cheek piece "bite".  I like the thumbhole stock, but being a Southpaw they are far and few between for me.
Friend's Knight ML had a lefthanded thumbhole stock and it felt good!

I don't thinks you can go wrong with the 50 cal muzzleloader. Super accurate and have ballistics that compare to a centerfire rifle. Modern muzzleloaders make slug guns look like Stone Age weapons. I started using a Savage 10ML last year and I doubt I go back to a slug gun again.

I haven"t gotten bit yet. I know a lot of guys don't like the thumbhole stocks but they are very comfortable for me. Yeah, southpaw stuff is kind of hard to come by. I have a thumbhole on a 10-22 that I had to reshape to make it fit me better, also my 12 guage remington is a thumbhole.

The more I think of it, the more a 50 cal makes more sense, til we can use pistol calibers in a lever!

Use to cast bullets for allot of calibers!  But the pirce of lead went through the roof and finding lead was almost impossible.  Wheel weights went to mostly zinc or jumped to $100 for a five gallon bucket.

But harder to do here in a small apartment.  And with birdshot at $45 for a bag, its just as cheap to but bulk casted from Hunters or Oregon Trail.

Dick's, in C'dale, has a 28" SS/Camo Omega for sale.  They are $420 plus tax.  Its not an Encore or Disc Extreme, but at that price, its a really good ML.  Figure I could bed the barrel to the stock and then get a really good scope.  And its able to shoot BH209 without purchasing another plug.  I have shot an Omega before and think its a great deer rifle capable of putting a sabot in the 9-ring at 150 yards.

i love mine i tried BH209 not a big fan of it or 777 i like pyrodx
max load and a 250gr shock wave bullet. but get the Encore
its just a better and more versatile gun and shoots just as
good thats just my 2 cents

I have a plain 20ga H&R tracker2 with the lite weight rifled barrel that will out shoot all the  fancy H&R ultras I've see. We shoot our own loads through them , not factory stuff. I have put 3 shots inside 3/4 inch at 100 yards with it.

Swift,
I killed my first deer with a Tracker 1 in 20ga.  Great shooting shotgun.
