New Stock Project for 17 hm2 - Now 8mm Mauser stock
« on: December 23, 2012, 05:57:49 AM »
I had a stock that I carved from a piece of black cherry a while back for a mauser project. I finished it, shot it twice and decided I didn't like the buehler saftey so I sold off the barreled action. I did not want to do another mauser, but I did not want to ditch the stock that I took months to hand carve. So I decided to Handi-ize it and really dress up my mach2. Here is some pics of progress.

two hurdles. One is to figure out how to turn 2 Gaboon ebony blocks into a pistol grip and grip cap to flesh out the finger grip area. Second is to figure out how to drill the back side of the thumb hole groove for the stock bolt. Once I solve those two challenges it will go quick. I'll get there. Maybe not fast, but I'll get it done. I am going to try and get this one done while I'm waiting for the 22-250 to come back from its rebore/rechamber.

I like it.

I've been sorta working on a similar project myself.  Cut up a very poorly inletted sporter stock for an 03 Springfield.  Did a bad job of drilling the stock bolt hole so set it aside for a while.  Just got a couple of stocks from Boyds and after seeing how poorly they fit the receiver I figured I can do at least that well so will take up the project again.

If the end product is not too embarrassing I post a couple of pics when done.

It was either the Handi rifle or pistol grips....and I can always still make pistol grips out of it.

Keep us posted.

Maybe I can help, if you'd post regular sized pics ( not thumbnails ) in my thread "Working without proper tools" of what the problem is, I might be able to suggest a way to cap the grip and fill out the finger section. Also have an idea on how to do the recessed hole for the stock bolt on a Thumbhole stock. Come on over and show me what and where your problem is.

Here is a pic of progress. Ebony, a hand drill and lot of sawdust and epoxy. Looks ugly now, cause of some "let me see if this will work" mistakes, but I will get er looking nice when it is all said and done.

Well I sold off my 17 mach2 a while back. I have been slowly working on this stock from time to time and I am ready to mount it to the 8mm Mauser and pillar bed the fore end. I will probably to that this evening. I am not pleased with over all look at this point. The buttsock is too wide. I need to lose about an inch of width off the toe to make it "look" right which means a new butt pad and further reshaping. That means it will take even longer to get to the final form, but it is functional for now.
A special thank you to Elkslayer4x5 for the link to his how too. Just follow his link he provided. I have multiple stock projects coming up in another thread and I have a good visual reference to do some of the techinical aspects like drilling concise bolt holes with just simple hand tools, etc.
