Hello, everybody. Now don't get me wrong..I see nothing wrong in hunting, but for myself, I gave it up years ago..though I wouldn't mind setting up a blind and shooting some Starlings with my single-shot Hornet in the fall when they gather in big flocks for the wild grapes...But I kind of gave up on hunting the four legged ones..that is until last night. Just about ready to head for bed..4:00AM..I work afternoons. When I hear what sounds like a womans scream. Our indoor cat instantly flattens on floor and starts a very low growl I have never heard form it before..like a very angry dog! Peering out front door window..I see our small cat crouching on porch...and a full grown Red Fox yapping at it.
My first thought was to scare it away..but then I remembered something my wife had told me last fall. She was in backyard and a Fox approched her..as she stood up..thinking it would run..it slowly came closer..cats were with her at the time..maybe it was hungry..but it unnerved her. Then our big cat came home with a hole in it's side..thought it was a cat fight..but maybe fox.
Anyway I was thinking it was all so useless..rifles were all locked up and it would probably run as soon as door was opened. Then I remembered the 6" Ruger Single-Six I had installed the magnum cyl. in..Owned this gun for nearly 30 years..and never got around to shooting magnums..I retrieved and loaded it with CCI hollowpoints.
Again the thought of just scaring it away crossed my mind...until as door was opened...the Fox started to approach door!
Staring right at me eyes locking on mine..I placed the front sight on bridge of nose & squeezed trigger.
OUCH!...forgot ear plugs! Those things are LOUD! Fox did a slow motion fall to side & never twitched.
On examination, I could see what a handsome animal it really was..kind of regret having to do that..but that little cat..and possibly others would have been lunch!
