Any one use tripple 7?
« on: March 14, 2013, 12:35:54 PM »
Looking to find out If tripple 7 would have the same effect for use in a thunder mug as far as noise and safety goes in comparison to black powder. Thanks

I don't think it will work.
I may not be completely sane, but at least I don't think I have the power to influence the weather.

Here is my take on triple 7.  It is readily available in places like Wally world, Meijer(midwestern chain), most local gun shops.   Price is usually more than a pound of Black.  25bucks in comparison to 20bucks.  I can get more shots out of a pound of "Tiple 7" with the reduced loads.  It isn't any good as a reenactor powder, you must compress it to work other wise it looks like a sparkler when you fire it out of a long gun.  It creats just as big a cloud of smoke used in a revolver firing blanks(reenactor).  People( non-shooters) are less afraid of a can sitting on a table that says 777 as compared to one that say Black Powder Explosive.  People( my wife early on)are more worried about storing Black Powder than they are 777.  Myself?  I have several pounds of each type and use them both target shooting and hunting varmits.
Hey it don't matter to me as long as I get to shoot my guns, and both are viable powders to use.

I have never used 777 but Pyrodex does not work well in artillery because there is not enough resistance from the shot's inertia for the pressure to get into its optimum range.  For blank loads, it would be even worse, in my opinion.

Just did a quick little experiment with  75 grains 3F Triple Seven and 75 grains 2F Goex in a 69 caliber cannon using 1 oz 12ga slugs. For distance and penetration it's Goex hands down. For what it's worth the Triple Seven does do a decent blank using paper towels for wadding. If I didnt have access to real  black, I'd prefer Triple Seven over Pyrodex any day.

If you use Triple 7 you need to be aware of a couple of things.

First it is a smokeless powder and leaves a corrosive residue just like Pyrodex.

When shooting in a cannon you must vigorously and enthusiastically clean the bore between shoots.  If you have a delay between shots the fouling will turn hard like cheap gritty concrete.  It will clean out with water, but final clean up at the end of the day calls for smokeless powder solvents and lots of oil.  The best cleaning method is that used for corrosive powder.

If you are shooting a Brass/Bronze cannon and or zinc balls, you really should avoid the black powder substitutes.   Bronze/Brass is often alloyed with zinc. The corrosive residue of the subs  will attack the zinc and causeo first surface etching and then surface checking.

I always hated 777 because of this. In my TC Triumph .50 cal after just one shot it would leave a thick hard carbon ring in the base of the bore. This stuff is so hard to scrub out I almost gave up on ML season. Blackhorn 209 solved that problem! I use Pyrodex for blank loads only when I'm out of Goex. I have to use wadding to make Pyrodex "POP"......... I would never use 777 in my cannons.
Goex with a little table flour mixed in makes an awesome blank load................ ;D

You will have to try it but it costs more so what's the point.  I loaned a museum a sleeved 3 pndr with a bore of 2 1/4 ".  They had pyrodex for a rifle so they used that with wonderful results, even a bit too loud to the delight of their young visitors.  However, when I delivered their 4 pndr, you can make more noise blowing your nose.  The larger gun requires real BP.
