442 split barrel!
« on: April 28, 2013, 06:06:52 PM »
S&W J frame 442 airweight hammerless rated +p with the 1 7/8 barrel. loaned to freind today to take his new girlfriend to the range. they also took the lc9 and his 9mm pistol. came back with the barrel on the j frame split right down the right side from the frame to the muzzle! half way down the barrel appears to be a slight bulge... looks like maybe a squib load and then they fired again? i load hp-38 with raineer 125 grain plated bullets. we have shot hundreds and hundreds of them through several guns without any problem. I am wracking my brain trying to figure where i might have screwed up. each case is charged with powder, i look into the case place it into the press and seat the bullet. no chances for a double charge..... but then shouldn't be any chance for a squib either. i m just sick over this, someone could have been hurt. i consider myself very carefull, but i am fallible for sure. my loads are just middle book loads nothing hot about them. has anyone any experience with a bulge in the barrel being caused by something other than obstruction?

During my 30 yrs of gunsmithing, NO.

But, it wouldn't hurt to ask Smith for free repair, you may only need to pay shipping.

If you don't ask, the answer is already NO.

They repair some free and others not, with no rhyme or reason, kinda random it appears.

Hope this helps a bit

Shootingly,

Sent a request to S&W for a return authorization and shipping label. Will send the gun in and they will tell me if it can be repaired and how much it will cost me. Then i will have to decide if it's worth repairing or just replacing. Hard lesson. wish i was sure of what happened. just glad no one got hurt.

What about other possible causes of a squib round? faulty primer? contaminated powder? or do i have to admit to myself i just screwed up and didn't put any damn powder in the case?

Just be thankful no one was injured and right it off as a lesson learned, it could have been any of the reasons mentioned and it could have bn neither but it happened  so all learns to be more careful, good luck with warrenty repair, should not be to much for a new barrel if needed to pay for.  Jim

Good rule of thumb in a revolver is a blown cylinder / top strap is almost always an over pressure load, a bulged / split barrel is an obstruction.  I'd be willing to bet they were firing double action, the squib stuck in the barrel, and a second, normal power load was fired immediately afterwards, causing the failure you note.  I have seen it happen several times when we still carried revolvers for duty use, and a lot of guys reloaded their own.  Usually when shooting fast double action.

Most likely no powder charge, though it is possible that cases powder charge had been compromised with spray lube?  I doubt it was a bad primer, as any primer firing with enough force to push the bullet into the barrel would be hot enough to ignite the powder as well.

Human error happens in any endeavor, including reloading.  I have been loading for a long time, and am pretty anal about it, and yet have had a few close calls myself.  Best advice is to use this as a learning tool.  Glad no one was hurt.  S&W should send you a free shipping label to return the gun, though it is iffy they will replace it as they will most likely determine a reloaded round was at fault....But you never know.

i was loading 308 with big charges........never a 38...with i tiny charge
i used a powder dispenser....workd great with big charges
i guess it fail to drop a charge into one case
double action revolver and rapid fire......primer put slug in barrel  second shot did the damage
now  i take a flash light and inspect  all rounds  in the tray at once  before the slug goes in

perhaps i need to re think my loading method. I was charging one case at a time and then seating the bullet to avoid double charging. thought i was being very carefull. Guess i was not as carefull as i thought. i like the idea of charging the cases and then looking and comparing them to one another. just did not like having all those cases of powder exposed at once. what ever i decide to do must endeavor to be even more carefull.

If you were doing the shooting, you might be  fairly sure it was one of your reloads but with someone else (with a new girlfriend) doing the shooting and you not present you have no idea where that load came from.  Could have been one left on the bench, picked up off the ground, given to him by someone else.  Weirdos have even been known to leave loads like that or overloaded rounds where shooters will find them and try to shoot them.
