Scope mounting 45 70
« on: March 19, 2013, 04:08:15 PM »
I have a 12" 45 70 barrel that I want to mount a scope to. On another barrel, I have an SSK TSOB base and 3 ring set up. This TSOB base is a 6 screw base.

Now, I'm thinking that I could use this on the TC 45 70 barrel? but it only has 4 screws to mount the base. If I use it, am I going to bugger the base / base screws / scope from the recoil of the 45 70?
I will be shooting 405gr to 18000 CUP.

I have put many, many rounds in the 18000CUP range through a four screw scope mount on three different barrels and haven't buggered anything yet.  Yes...I would prefer a six screw mount, but have never had one on any of my 45-70's.  I do ensure that all screws are correct length and everything fits just right....locktite the screws and lap the rings.  Another point I think worth mentioning is that I've never used a large...ie variable...scope.....short, light, fixed power 2X/4X Burris or Leupold.  Much less mass to torque the mount and screws.  Good luck with yours! ;)

Thanks Walt.
 I have a Leupold VX11 1x5 scope.......it's the smallest and lightest I have. I'll try it.
