One-Pounder English Yacht Cannon
« on: March 17, 2013, 03:30:51 PM »
The bronze barrel is 35 in. o/a.  Bore and trunnions are 2-inch diameter.  Engravng on basering seems to read;  "C.H. Gilks, Tower-Hill, London."  The carriage seems to be orginal to the piece.  From info on the few other Gilks cannon I could locate, Gilks made such cannons with an elevating device, perhaps a quoin, but this original carriage is missing that if it had one.  The piece looks 18th C., but just a bit of research on the company shows that it operated from about 1860-1875 and perhaps later.  The first reinforce is large in diameter compared to the second.

Sorry for the less-than-crystal-clear photos, had to use a phone camera.
