Pickled green tomatoes?
« on: May 21, 2013, 08:03:11 PM »
When I was a kid, my grandmother had a neighbor who would, on rare occasions, pickle a batch of green Roma tomato slices. They were simply incredible tasting, but I only had them a couple of times and then she was gone. What I wouldn't give to have that recipe! Anybody here have one I could try?

My Grandfather use to make them. Don't have a recipe though. I don't care much for tomatoes but those sure were good. Just did a search on it. Lots of recipes there. Gramps use to do pickled green beans too that were very good.

back in the day we had green tomato ketchup that looked like chopped maters . It was used on bean soup.

When I was my mother and grandmother would work together to preserve green tomato slices and make green tomato relish.  As I recall lye was involved.  As I recall I didn't like them but I didn't like a lot of things as a kid and I'd like to try them again if I ever get the chance.

BTW, green taco sauce is like green ketchup but spicier.  I keep it around for a few things.  I think it's made from tomatillos which are a cousin to tomatoes.
