Brother picked up a M760 in 300 Savage a few years ago and he loves it.  I have been shooting a Remington 722 in 300 Savage that my Dad passed to me.  Loads are out of a Hornady Manual.

I took this buck with one shot from the 300 Savage.

I have a 760 in .300 Sav. , it was made in 1954 , It was a little worn , when I got it , and someone had it drilled and tapped it for a Weaver # 63 Base . I shortened the barrel 2" and put a short tube action , and wood on it . Pretty handy rig , have a Weaver pivot base & rings , and iron sights too . The scope is a Nikon Monarch 2 - 7 X32 . I shoot 150 Gr. Speer RNs out of it , with either IMR-4064 , or Win. 748 . I have a 722 in .300 also !

the 760 is a good pump action rifle.
The 300 Sav is inbetween 30-30 and 308 Win in power.
The 300 Sav with 180 grain soft points would be a great deer, pig, moose, black bear sized game gun in woods to short open fields.
200 yards would not be a strech for the round.

Not much difference between the 300 savage & the 308 Winchester.  ;) it's a fine old cartridge.

There was a time when if a fellow said he hunted with a 300 he was not talking about a magnum.

I personally own four .300 Savage rifles.  A Savage Model 99 from 1956, a Remington 722 from 1949, a Remington 700 Classic and a limited run (300 pieces) Remington 7600 pump.  All four are wonderfully accurate with the Savage 99 and Remington 722 holding an edge in the accuracy department.  I've killed deer with the 99 and the 722 using the 150 grain WWPP and Nosler 150 grain Ballistic Tip.  Each was a bang flop, DRT.  I use the now discontinued Alliant Reloder 12 powder to achieve 2700fps +.  When I heard that Alliant was going to discontinue Reloder 12, I did the LGS circuit and bought 19 pounds of RL-12, Lot 12.  I use RL-12 in the .300 Savage, 30-06, .35 Remington, .358 Win, and .35 Whelen.  For some reason, my .308 Winchesters are just ho hum about RL-12, both in speed and accuracy.

I once read a story about a pair of guys that were talking about their great hunting adventure where they went ot Greenland or Iceland to hunt Polar Bear for some museum.  They talked about being armed with the new Hot 300 round and I assumed it was the 300 Win Mag or 300 H&H or possibly the 300 WBY.  They later said the year and I ruled out the 300 Win and WBY but guessed they were taking 300 H&H and then they talked about the Savage 99 Rifles and I knew it was the 300 SAVAGE.  and guess I had grossly underestamated it and 308Win.

mcwoodduck:
You might be referring to a hunt described by Ben East.  East was a former Editor for Outdoor Life magazine.  His adventures were published in Outdoor Life and consolidated in a number of books.  His Polar Bear adventure was published in the magazine and I read the story many, many years ago.  The hunt is also described in his book entitled, DANGER! Explosive True Adventures of the Great Outdoors.  The book was copywrited in 1970.
“East wrote that he and his partner had two permits.  East permit was to collect a bear for the Cranbook Institue of Science at  Bloomfield Hills, Michigan.”

A key piece of information provide by East is that he had never hunted anything larger then a Whitetail at that time.  Says the hunt took place in 1937 in a Sound off Hudson Bay.  East wrote that, “he and his partner were using 300 Savage rifles.”  He noted his rifle was loaded with “180-grain bullets.”

Sounds like it was a running battle with East grazing the bear with his next to the last shot.  That made the bear mad, and with his final round East hit the bear between the eyes.

“Cooper and I were carrying .300 Savage rifles.  At the time we thought them adequate.”

Could be the same story.  I can not remember where I read it, As I went on a hunting story reading rampage.
