Recommend for hunting
« on: March 29, 2013, 03:53:34 AM »
Veral,
I have a Marlin 1895 450 M with a 22 inch barrel. I'm on the fence with what bullet weight to go with? What would you recommend for hunting?

With that handle I presume you hunt moose. Perhaps you need to confirm that for Veral. ;)

No, the name came from a friend that passed away a few years ago. Most of my hunting is deer and elk. I did forget to add the barrel twist is 1:20.

350 to 400 gr LFN gas checked, without crimp groove.  Ask for 460 diameter and size that size as long as loaded ammo will slip into the chamber.  Set OAL so it feeds smooth as water pours out of a boot, and crimp firmly enough so bullets don't get knocked deeper in the case from magazine slamming.  Use a Lee factory crimp die to do the crimping.  It seems most people are happiest with 400 gr.  350 gr will kill anything in North America with ease and less recoil.    The gun will shoot 500 grainers very well, and deliver enough power to break both shoulders on a mouse or a moose.  But a 350 gr will break one shoulder and kill him as quickly.   So if I'm leaving you on the fece with this answer, email me at  LBTisAccuracy@localnet.com and we'll discuss your personal preferences.

just  for  my purposes

a 45-70  going fast enough to require a gas check  is more fun than  i want
that  i am too  cheap  to spend the extra pennies for the check

i went  with 405g......just because thats a traditional weight
ant thing less  is not a 45-70 [to me]   anything  more is too much  ..[and waste lead]

i have  both  WFN  and LFN....from  veral
i like the WFN better  but took  more work to get it to  load and feed..it needs to be deep seated
