I've heard of that in Arizona, Idaho or Nevada but IOWA? Hmmmm. I've heard that wolves and coyotes don't get along and wolves will dig out a den of "yotes and eat the pups. I've seen videos of wolves stalking & killing 'yotes. Maybe now that we've rid the east of wolves it has allowed the coyotes to move into new territory with no competition. I just wish they would reintroduce wolves to Connecticut and Massechusets where so many do gooders want us in the West to have to live with the wolves they have forced on us. Well, there's plenty of deer and small game for the coyotes in Iowa.

I've never hunted in the northern parts of Iowa, but we have had good numbers of coyotes in the southern part of the state for many years. Thirty + years ago I knew a few people who hunted them, in southern Iowa, with dogs and always got quite a few. Trappers got a goodly number too, back then. I used to call them in and had some success. I used a Lohman call and a Remington XP-100. But I haven't actively hunted yotes for quite a few years.

My oldest son got me interested in it again, and I've called in four for him so far on two hunts. :) Used a Johnny Stewart Predator 2 E-caller and was very pleased with it. Not much volume but good sounds. And I made a Radio Shack caller that I can hook up to the JS caller for more volume. Also bought a dove decoy that we plan to try for a motion distraction, when I get over this damned pnumonia!

Baby those lungs! You'll need them for doing the puppy KI-YI after you shoot. My brother & I also started calling recently. I find it more challenging that deer hunting or at least so. Brought one in after 6 stands. I should say killed one after 6 stands. Brought in 2 others and God knows how many we didn't see. I'd practice my hand calls more but it scares our dogs (wouldn't cha know). Have an Extreme Dimensions E-caller and hand calls. I suspect there are better E-callers out there. The ED caller has "canned sounds" that sound mostly like a recording of someone blowing a fawn bleat call and others. I like to do my own challenge howls and ki-yis.

Hellgate,

Is your Extreme Dimension the one with the remote, or is it the wired one? I looked at both of those when I was in the market but I couldn't bring myself to spend that kind of bucks for something I might not use very much. But then the price of the quality E-callers is outrageous!!!!

BTW, you might find it interesting to know that a hardcast Snakebite bullet loaded over 8.1 grains of Blue Dot is one heck of a yote getter out to 75 yards! 8)

Cuts,

Yes it is the remote one. I have put it about 100 yds away and it worked. Too bad no dogs showed up. I love the idea of putting the caller away from the shooters.
It will play two sounds at the same time but I haven't done that much. I have emailed the company twice to see if I can get different sound chips and have not heard back. That bothers me. It makes me wonder if they're going belly up or don't give a damn. I would like to get a meadow vole squeek sound and better yips & challenge howls. I also have the MOJO Critter decoy and I made a "confidence decoy" out of a black plastic garbage bag and a coathanger that looks like a small raven. I put it on any nearby fencepost. I figure if there's a raven that hasn't flown the coyote's gonna think the coast is clear. I have been watching so much "coyote porn" (varmint calling videos on websites and you tube) that I'm yelling SHOOT! SHOOT! just like when watching westerns. A great source of sounds and info is "Varmint Al's" web page:  www.varmintal.com   gobs of good stuff.

Cuts,

LOL!!! I do the same thing! I keep wanting to yell "SHOOT!!!!!"

I've got some calls downloaded from Varmint Al's page on my MP3 player to use with my home made caller but haven't tried them yet. That's because the Johnny Stewart sounds are really nice and I can use it with the home made caller plugged into a jack on the JS caller. It's got the cotton tail distress, howl, Ki Yi pup, fawn in distress, and "Jack Vittles" sounds on it.

I bought a new Savage in .223 not long before I got sick and haven't had a chance to wring it out yet. So I've been using my Rossi 92 and waiting for them to come in close. My son is using his Midnight Dragon AR-15. He got a double with it the first time out...lucky stiff! (not really, he's just that good....dang it! ;D )

These Iowa yotes are BIG these days too! Three of the ones he shot were over 40 pounds! I suspect they've been eatin' good this winter. I know that, during last deer season, a gut pile wouldn't last 24 hours!

I've heard the Savage is one of the most accurate rifles made and very affordable. I also have an AR-15 I've used when calling. When I see the videos and they miss the first shot it seems forever for the second. I'da had 3 shots off to their one. I'm gonna post some recent pics. The website wouldn't let me post them all at once so it'll be one at a time.

Pic #1 is a dog I got on about the 12 round fired. The coyote was a full 1/3 mile away (confirmed from maps and Google Earth) when it collided with the bullet. (back of the head and out the eye). My thumb that is holding the legs is even with the jeep road from which we shot in the far backgound.

The wind was right so I could hunker down, crouch, run and crawl to w/in 50yds to put him down with a 60gr Hornady SP from the Mini-14.

Taking 20 coyotes in a weekend almost sounds too good to be true but with the luck those guys had, they missed the boat by not purchasing a lotto ticket that weekend.
