I have three Henry's in LR; an H001, H001T and an H004 GB... and also an H001TM in .22 WMR... I agree, it is a really fine rifle and a pure joy to shoot. When I just want to have fun shooting, I grab my Henry's... I was fortunate to get in on a special offer to RFC Henry fan's from Andy Wickstrom of Henry Wisconsin and got Brasslite covers for both of my Frontier's... they have Skinner Black Gold peeps and Lyman 17 AUG globes with  Lee Shaver inserts... I am smiling as I write this!  :D
I also have the Big Boy in .357 and .44 Mag.

The only lever I have is my Marlin .44 but I will have to say that my .44 Handi without a scope feels better in the hand while carrying at "squirrel" arms.  That's holding it around the frame.  My Pardner 22 inch 20 gauge at 5 lbs 2.5 oz feels even better though.

I may pick up a octagon Maggie, all I could find was a std and it a real good shooter with peeps and a glow worm front site.



My std has a funky integrated barrel band/front site so no ability to add the Lyman globe site...

Nobody here says anything about the noise that other high end guns make like ruger no 1 and marlin levers. My hand is are very quiet just notice it some time. I hunt in lower Michigan and use a ush youth model in 20 gauge and it is plenty. When I go to Alaska or pig hunting I prefer a repeater.

Out of all my rifles there is only two I have to decide on for a "carry in the woods"
A 94 Win Trapper in 30-30
A M77 Ruger Ultra Lite in 250 Savage
When you figure the weight difference between them loaded and the Handi's with the same amount of ammo the above mentioned win out nearly every time for me.
My Handi's are mostly used either as "truck guns" or plinkers and of course hunting rifles for the Grandkids.

CW... Skinner will dovetail the Henry barrel band site so that you can use a dovetail front sight, including the Lyman... If memory serves they only charge $15.

I have handis, levers and bolt actions. For "woods" hunting my pick is a 60 year old Savage 340. It weighs just over 6 lbs, holds 4 cartridges and shoots pointed 30-30 ammo.

When I posted earlier on this I compared Handi and Marlins in .30-30 and .32-20 each.  The rifle that goes out about 75% of the time actually is  my camo shorty maxi.  I don't know yet if the shorty Savage 24V Maxi/20ga. is going to give her a run for her money. ::)   I'll have to see.

i hunt more with a bow than i do a rifle.


i hunt more with an air rifle than a powder burner.


i prefer, as a hold over from U.S. Army marksmanship training, "One shot, one kill"


that being said...distance is the determining factor; within 100 yds...my open sighted lever. beyonf that,  scoped single/bolt.

Thats an easy question for me. My 44 mag lever gun. Its compact, short, and multiple quick shots and I dont have to carry cartridges in a pocket. It will kill any game or predator I may encounter. The single shot is great for hunting and I rarely use/need a second shot. Not that I'm that good, but hit or miss you just dont get many second shots.

Hey dwalk... I'm an avid airgunner too.  Range fees around here make backyard and bicycling to local field/woods areas airgunning alot of sense.  My favorites are crosman 22xx pistol with muzzle 'accessory' and a Beeman C1.  Still recovering my shoulder for the bows.  Quiet is nice.

Sorry I got in late on this, we had some internet issues here over the last week.  BUT, this is an easy one.  I am like Quick, light and handy trumps heavy and powerful every time! (and that includes my handguns also)   IF I were in a 'survival' mode, it would have to be a lever action.  And as much as I like my old Marlin 336 in .35 rem with an 18" barrel, for 'woods walkin' or hunting, my Handi Topper 30-30 wins every time!  I love the old style, slim barrel on this gun and it is just plain my favorite rifle ever.  I do like my 7-08 Superlite with the plastic stock (donated by PeteMI, thanks Pete) and it is very light and 'handi' and an accurate heavy hitter.  But there's just something about my old Topper, whether it's the balance or what, but I just love it.  It feels as light as the Superlite even with it's wood stock, and then there's the fact that is will still out shoot most guns 50 years younger.  As an aside, I did enjoy my Win 20" 9422 in the woods, but when it's value went to $800 when Winchester closed shop, it went down the road to finance more Handi's.  I'll have my hands on my 20" Savage 219 30-30 in a couple weeks, and while that will be fun to play with, I'm sure it will not be near as accurate as my Topper.  At least the couple I have fired were definately not minute of angle guns.  Handi's Always!  44 Man
