Sound of the Bullet
« on: November 19, 2012, 07:28:13 AM »
Had a great opening weekend of deer season here in Alabama. Took a 5 point with a messed up rack on Saturday morning and an 8 point  with a nice rack from the same stand on Sunday afternoon. My buddy and I hunt a small club with only 210 acres so some major deer management would be a hard thing. We don't shoot babies but do take does and the occasional spike to fill our freezers which is our main objective. Being very fond of pistol rounds in a rifle I shoot a 20 inch Encore chambered for the 45 LC. I handload them hot over a dose of Lilgun. Last season I shot the Hornady 250 gr XTP's but noticed the bullet came apart on closer shots. I changed over to the 240 gr XTP Magnum for it's thicker jacket. Was lucky as they both shoot the same POI at 100 yards. What was the noticable difference was the sound of the bullet hitting the deer. Both animals were 90-100 yards and right after the boom of the rifle I heard a loud " WHOP " when the bullet hit them. The 5 pt was DRT and the 8 PT ran about 60 yards or so but that 240 gr XTP Magnum made a heck of a mess when it passed thru both animals. Have been hunting for many years with a wide variety of calibers but have never heard a bullet hit this way.

Thought I would add this to my initial post. I've heard bullets hit deer before. Someone a good ways off shoots an animal and it's between you and the hunter. You can hear the whop before the boom. I've just never heard the whop with my own gun.

I shot a pig in March with my .243. When the gun went off, I got a sound back like a wooden bat hitting a rock. He was standing in water, so I don't know if it was the passed through bullet smacking the water. At distance, when I shoot deer through the lungs, I can hear a "pabump" sound too.

That is something that always gives me a bit of a smile when I shoot the 45-70. I call it the boom, thwack. Got the same effect with shotgun slugs too.

Happens when the target is far enough away that the muzzle blast has dissipated enough for you to hear the bullet impact.  It happens every time, sometimes the target is just too close and is overshadowed by the muzzle blast.

Same thing happens with a bow.  I hardly ever hear the arrow impact from the 5 yard shots, but the 20 yard hits I can hear just fine.

I have yet to be able to hear the bullet hit but my longest shot was just over 200 yds. On the other hand I still remember my first bow kill. The hit sounded like when you thump a watermellon.

Love the Wop!  I haven't always heard it, of course, close shots, or windy or just didn't hear some, but the ones I do...music to my ears! I too killed a nice muley around 75yds with a .45 Colt round from a Marlin, using that 250 XTP. It dropped the buck with a high shoulder shot, but fragmented in the spine. I foolishly traded the rifle off, but I was going to use the Buffalo Bore 320 hard cast load next. I've heard good things about that 240 mag bullet however. My 35 Whelen AI sure makes a womp sound!

It seems to me that with just about any rifle shooting over 75 yards or so you'll hear the bullet impact if you're listening for it and conditions are right.  I love to shoot my 300 yard gong with the the .45-70, the .38.55 or the .445.  You can shoot, take a sip of coffee, and hear the klang.

You can hear the low velocity caliber a hit the target  at close distances, I can hear my 280 Rem whop a deer past 250 yards.

Shoot a suppressed firearm and you will really start hearing the bullets impact.  It all has to do with muzzle blast dissipating before the sound of the bullet impact has time to make it back to you.  With the suppressor the muzzle blast is already reduced to a level that is it easy to hear bullet impacts on fairly close targets.  You can even hear a suppressed .22 rimfire hit the cardboard target at 25 yards.

I can't remember hearing the sound of the hit on a deer :(   But the sound of a solid hit on a prairie dog will make you ;D ;D ;D

Maybe I'll have to start wearing my electric muffs deer hunting ;)

I tend to hear the whop in open country, not so much in the woods. I have a honey hole out in Junction that is elevated above an open pasture. It is prevalent there.

I hear the smack also . Mostly on longer shots 30 yards or more. Sounds like a watermelon splitting open from being dropped when ripe.
If ya can see it ya can hit it !
