Your Opinions Please
« on: March 30, 2013, 07:08:28 AM »
What IYO is gonna be the simplest/cheapest what to get my hands on a couple of adult sized walnut/hardwood butt stocks ? They are scarce as hen's teeth 'round here it seems.
I have 3 SB2 frames all with youth stocks, one I'll keep as is for the younguns, other two need stocked. I plan on callin CS Monday and check price availability of factory replacements. Also pondering sending in a frame for additional barrels, maybe both. Kinda depends on the $$$!
What do you fellas think about setting up one rifle for scoped barrels and another for irons, probally a peep and shorter barrels, close range stuff?  I find that most scopes mount a bit high for me, and think that with hammer mods and such setting up a "dedicated" reciever might be worthwhile?
Thanks, in advance for your imput.           Rick

WELCOME Rick!

You have but two options for the walnut furnature. The factory BC wood and the Factory 12G Dlx. Neither is great for a scope but fine for open sites. Both should be avialable form the factory and the CS should be able to direct you. But you an also get online off the H&R store.

To save a few $$ you will need patience and you will likely end up with a couple BC stock sets for 100-150$ per set.

I've bought a couple walnut sets off the above.  If cheap is one of your criteria you'll never find one.  The walnut stocks are/were not high volume they just don't show up often used.  When they do you just have to buy them and swallow the price.

Welcome Rick!! You can get the BC stock and matching long forend from H&R, but the shorter carbine forend isn't available, see the retail parts page in the FAQs. There's one more walnut option, the Topper Deluxe Classic works fine on any H&R frame, sadly it's no longer offered by H&R, but lots of em have been made and can be found in the H&R Classifieds occasionally, I have several of them, all on scoped rifles, a couple pics below. Walnut stained hardwood stocks(called palletwood here) are commonly available in the classifieds, from H&R and ebay as has been mentioned. I dunno what CW means by the online H&R store, but there isn't one, hasn't been for about 5 yrs.  :-\

I forgot to add they are available from gunstocksinc as well.  There not finished and you'll have to purchase the forarm spacer but they are readily available walnut stocks.

Get the PW MC for scope use and the PW low comb/'shotgun' style for open or peep sights (the MC puts my eye too high for irons). Refinish/stain/refine the shape to your heart's content without a lot of expense, but keep your eye out on the classifieds for the 'fancy wood' if you someday still want it.

Thanks for the leads, Guys! I'm thinking the "pallet wood" might be my best bet right now, 'specially if some new barrels are in the works!
