Anyone had experience with the .25-35? Or .25-35 Improved?

Good morning,
 I had a 25-35 barrel made a couple years back. Eskimo found or had a barrel and we worked out a swap. He sent the barrel to the smith and I sent him the item he wanted. It was stubbed form a 20 Ga barrel.  Its a very light but long 24" barrel. Its nice and handi!

It shoots 100g bullets very well. I am still working on a get 117 RN loading as this is the bullet I really want to use. It will shoot about 1.5" with the 117 but under 1" with 100's and lighter. The twist is correct, but that 117 is a very long bullet.

 dk17hmr, I just had to have a 25-35 in a handi, so bought 223 light weight.
 sent barrel to gun smith had rebored and recamber to 25-35.
 I am a happy ol' dog. cost was high high. Marv.

  Mine is not a handi, but had a Marlin 336 rebarreled to .25-35...very nice rifle..shoot 75 grain Vmax for varmits, must load one at a time, some hundreds, but mostly my game bullet is the 117 RN...have shot p. dogs, gophers, coyotes, antelope, mule deer, whitetail deer, and wild turkey with it...it is a fun rifle to shoot...in wooded country it would be very useful..Sell wrote and article about the .25-35 IMP. Paco Kelly's book LEVER GUNS has a chapter on the caliber...he uses cast bullets for small game hunting ...I m not a cast bullet user in rifles...

I would think a 25-35 in a handi would be a lot of fun.  My son has one in a Win 94 and used it to take his first deer with the 117 grain hornady round nose.  It worked very well and it is a lot of fun to shoot.  I seem to recall a member here from Wyoming has a 25 Remington in a handi.  Although lacking a rim that some like so much in a handi, it too would be a lot of fun and probably even more rare than a 25-35.  Both it and the 25-35 AI look like a "more modern" cartridge not that is an important consideration.

I had a 25 Remington converted from a 22 Hornet by Wayne York several years ago. I love it. Seems it has a preference for 117 grain bullets from Hornady, either SST's or RN's and R15 powder. Later this spring, I hope to create a better load with W748, if somehow I can find the time. Darn work gets in the way of everything fun.
 
If I had to do it over, I would have it done with a superlite barrel.

I had a stubbed barrel from a member here and did pretty conclusive cast bullet tests to prove the 1:10 twist would shoot the 75(?) and 87 gr. 25-20 bullets as well, or better than the 25-20 Win. Low Wall I had (with a pristine bore, but the old std. slow twist where the 87 was about as heavy as it would stabilize) and shoot heavier/longer (better B.C.) bullets marvelously. I decided that something around 100gr was the cat's meow for performance and trajectory. BTW, that is what I decided with my old 257 Bob, wayyyy back too. It is a nice, mild mannered handloader's dream cartridge. Keep your eye on case stretch, though, the taper in that case I think likes to grow the necks.
I only sold it because I just dont hunt anymore and if I (emphasis, I) need more than a 22LR I use my 22Mag, and go right on up to my 30 cal.s/38-55/45-70/577 Snider from there.

I love the 22 LR, and have shot 10s of thousands of them, but they have limitations off paper. I know that a 22 Short behind the ear will take a black bear or hog, etc., but I would rather use my 22Mag for medium to large varmints, or even big fox squirrels, and as a walk about gun I feel pretty good with it for feral dogs/'protection'. I also like the way the 22Mag Win. Dynapoint, flash plated lead HP bullet at 1500fps takes down my steel targets with an authoritative thwak. After thousands of cast bullet 22 Hornet loads, the 22Mag does as well for me (45gr. bullet at 1450-1500fps is the same regardless of RF or CF).
I decided that if I 'need' more beans I might as well just go up to my 30cals. with cast bullets, or larger calibers, than feel like I had to have every inbetween caliber, inventory, bullet selection, test time, analysis, ad nauseam...........(or, I got old and lazy, just want to grab a box and go shoot).
Just me and where Im at in this stage of my life; its workin' real good for me......

I have a 25-35 Handi that was made from a handi 25-06 barrel that i got cheap.  Larry stubbed it and set it back using the stub and barrel from the 25-06.   I have not had a chance to shoot it yet but no reason to think it wont be a winner.  One of my favorite Encore barrels is also a 25-35, I have killed several good bucks with it using 100 grain ballistic tip bullets.  It is a perfect cartridge for the handi.

gcrank1: Sorry that this reply is so long on coming back to you. Thank you for your reply. inasmuch as I was just curious. Too many people put down the .22LR as useless unless you are JUST plinkin. It and it's mag big brother are quite a round. As I said in the post to you, I wasn't chiding you----just askin'. God Bless to you and yours.

I've been Jonesing for a .25-35 Improved for awhile now and you guys are making it worse.    Now I have to start the process of gathering the bits to get one made up.

I dont know what the availability of jacketed bullets may be now, or especially in the future, but I think I need to be able to make lead bullets for my calibers, and have for a longggg time. The reduced velo (and pressure) parameters of, say, wwt alloy based bullets pretty much means that the old standard cartridges will hold as much (or more) powder than I can use and the brass is not stressed to near what it would otherwise be. Thus, for me, the 25-35, 30-30, etc. are plenty without going to 'Improved'. If you have enough jacketed bullets stashed to be able to make hot rod loads feasible go for it!

I like the improved for the same reason as I have a K-Hornet.  The accuracy and case life are improved. 

I share your concern about bullet availability down the road and this is one of the reasons I bought the .45-70 and that I have molds for all the calibers I shoot.  I hope for the bast and plan for the worst.
