Tig weld barrel extension ?
« on: February 19, 2004, 02:36:14 AM »
I want to put an extension on my 15"ss factory encore .223 barrel. After taking some mesurements I have found that a ss 1/4" pipe coupling is within a few .000 of the same od size as the end of my bbl and a 9/16" drill bit removes all threads from the id and the length makes it right at 16". I guess my ? is how much heat can the end of the barrel take and not deform or ruin the crown? I have seen this guy tig 2 pop cans togeather so I am pretty confident that taking his time he can keep the heat at a minimum also would not silver soldering use more direct heat? I am probly gonna do this and if something bad might happen I could always cut barrel length back to 12" or so ? thanks for any input. Kurt

It can be done.  The inside needs to be purged with the same gas you are welding with to keep scale or sugaring from forming.  Why do you want to make it 16"?  To be a legal rigle length it would have to be 16.25".

The coupling I will be using will put total length at a few .000 over the minimum length of 16" I know they make the manufactured barrels 16 1/4" but I believe the law is 16" and with the way this coupling fits with no grinding or cutting  that is why I want to us it. If I am running a coolant through the barrel will that keep it from scaling or will the argon or whatever we us be enough to cool it? thanks for input Kurt

Normally I would suggest using heat stop paste.  It will halt formation of scale in the bore, which is what we need to worry about..  also be aware there is an over all length minimum of 26 inches as well as the 16 inch minimum for barrel length.   The extra 1/4 inch is in case the BATFE ruler is a bit tight.  They do tend to be a bit uptight about such things..  Best to ask them up front.. may save headaches later!

Gunnut69 the overall length applies only to a shoulder fired gun does'nt it? I have the heat past will that work better than a coolant ? I always thought the way the heat paste worked was it drew the heat away from the arc and if that is the way it works would that not draw heat to the bore ? thanks Kurt

Heat can't be 'drawn', it can only move at a rate defined by the material it travels through.  Heat stop paste absorbs heat from the material it is applied to.  This will reduce the heat allowed to continue on by.  In this application it also isolates from oxygen the interior of the bore.  The oxygen in contact with hot steel is where the damaging scale occurs.  Coolant would also work but is really not needed..

Purging the bore with argon  keeps the Oxygen away also.  And would not leave you with backed on heat paste.
