280 loads, actually multipe loads
« on: April 04, 2013, 04:44:07 PM »
I've been thinking of using my 280 nef to do some varmint hunting. I recently bought a 223  to do the same, and picked up a few pds of blc-2 powder to load it. Today i was searching for blc-2 loads, and came across loads for the 223, 243, and 280 among the listed loads. I have a mdl 70 in 243 as well, so i'm thinking... ok i can use the same powder in all three. A few questions....

Should i be concerned (action strength) about hot loads in my nef 280  with 26"bbl ?  Thinking max load 120 v max's.

While i know the powder will work for all three, and shows good velocitys... How much of a mismatch  in burn rate  for these guns/loads?

The forementioned 280,and load 3,200 fps?
A Rem 223 bdl sporter,24" bbl, 52gr a max's at close to max. 3,300 fps?
A Model 70 win in 243, 22"bbl 65 gr v max's max load at 3,500 fps?

Thoughts...?

Mine worked fine as a 280, works great as a 280 Improved.  ;) 270 Win runs 5kpsi higher than the 280 and is a factory chambering in the Handi, so I wouldn't worry about full pressure 280 loads.

Tim,  did you imp your imp yourself?  Looks like yours likes the 160's too. Any experience with the light balls ... 100-120's ? I've only shot mine twice, once to check zero, once to kill my buck last yr. If my paper shot was any indication of accuracy it'll shot less than moa with rem 140's

Wayne did the rechamber, it's actually a 280 Improved-improved since the barrel can't be set back, it won't shoot factory ammo, fire form loads have to be seated into the lands or a false shoulder created.  Never shot anything lighter than 140gr.

Looks like you gained some capacity too. So your fire forming standard 280,or the nosler imp stuff?  I like the 280 alot, but it is a quirky cartridge. Acouple of name changes, pressure changes, now two different imp's in it's life span.

I like correct head stamps whenever I can, so I've used Nosler Akley brass.
