How's chances?
« on: March 13, 2013, 11:54:32 AM »
How's chances our present .17 HMR can someday be rechambered to take the new Winchester .17 Super mag ?
Here's an article on the super mag:

That's a good idea, had not thought about that.  Will have to check out that idea.

What Is A Veteran?
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

IG I do love the 17's I have a Mach 2 and an HMR. My problem with a long range 17 would be seeing the target that is small enough that the 17 will kill. I shoot crows, squirrels, rabbits etc with my 17's using head shots to ensure quick kills. Now if I can get a magnum optic thing going I would be ok. My tired ole eyes can't even see a squirrel at 200 yds. Unless he's moving.

Now that being said, that new 17  super magnum is appealing. Anyone need a 17 Mach 2 barrel or a 17 hmr barrel ?  ;D

Put me down as wait and see on the new 17SM.   Manufacture claims like the linked article tend to be very (to wildly) optimistic.  I don't see how there will be a market for both the 17SM and the 17HMR.  There have been a lot, and I mean a lot of 17 caliber wildcats made over the last 50+ years and the 17HMR is the ONLY one to find commercial success.  17's are a niche market and right now that market is filled with the 17HMR.

A few topics down there is a thread where we were discussing this very thing.  I do not think it would be possible because the large case head would mean that the firing pin would strike too far towards the center.  As soon as ammo comes out I may give an offset stub a try, if I go this route it would likely be on a SB2 receiver.

According to this reply in the GA blog, no, as dublung4 stated, the larger rim on the 17WSM wouldn't be impacted by the firing pin of a 17 Sportster, it would be closer to the center of the round.

No, the new .17wsm cartridge is about a centimeter longer, and has a larger overall diameter. Re-chambering and re facing of the bolt would be, at a minimum, required to even get it to load. Even then however, because of the diameter difference, it would probably not work do to the location of the existing firing pin. The existing firing pin would then be striking closer to the center of the round than the rim. MSRP of the rifle is Less than $350.00 it would be much less expensive to purchase the rifle than pay a smith to do all the work required to retrofit an HMR.

It might work, but I doubt it, there's quite a difference in rim size

Do you mean to say you don't keep an empty case in the truck at all times just in case? ;D ;D

That's a neat trick.  I always resorted to leaving the new gun in the trunk of the car until my wife wasn't home, then I snuck it in.  Once in, it was one of the older guns.

Well she only goes in the gunroom prior to hunting season, or if I get lost in there for to long.  So by the time she notices, "I've had that one for awhile", but she is real good about it, she knows it keeps me off the streets at night, and if we are out at night she is safe. In eight years of marriage and over 50 some in the room she has never said no when I did ask.  Yes I am BLESSED!!! :) :) :)
