Trayvon Martin's parents have settled a wrongful death claim for an amount believed to be more than $1 million against a Florida homeowners association where their teen son was killed, Fox News confirms.
 
Trayvon was shot and killed by Neighborhood Watch volunteer George Zimmerman in Sanford, Fla., on Feb. 26, 2012.
Zimmerman has been charged with second-degree murder, but he says he fired in self defense after the 17-year-old attacked him.
In paperwork made public, both parties specified that they would keep the settlement amount confidential, The Orlando Sentinel reported.
 
“It is understood and agreed that the payment made herein is not to be construed as an admission of any liability by or on behalf of the releasing parties; but instead the monies being paid hereunder is consideration for avoiding litigation, the uncertainties stemming from litigation as well as to protect and secure the good name and good will of the released parties,” the settlement said.
 
Benjamin Crump, the Martins' attorney, had “no comment on that subject," he told The Orlando Sentinel.
The document released from the settlement has eliminated the specific amount of the settlement, as well as the names of the parties and people making payment.
The homeowners association president did not return the newspaper’s calls seeking comment on the amount.
 
Zimmerman’s attorney Mark O’Mara said the teen’s parents tried to settle through mediation and the association had offered $1 million, but they had reportedly rejected this amount, OrlandoSentinel.com reported.
A hearing in which Zimmerman will argue he was acting in self-defense is scheduled for April. The judge has said that hearing will be at least 45 days before the trial. The settlement will not affect the criminal case.

 Someone explain to me how this is for "Wrongful Death"? How can they determine that before Zim is ever tried? I can't see how this will not prejudice any jury pool against Zim! If he is found guilty of 2nd degree murder, well heck yeah, I can see how the lawyers could go for WD; but if it was self defense, then Trayvon was a criminal attacker. Well, its done now, but if  Zim is acquitted, they should give the money back. What a mess...

Since the article states the claim was settled and not a judgement, I assume the insurance company weighed the options and gave them monies now.  If you remember O.J., he was acquitted in the criminal case , but still found liable in civil court for wrongful death.  I too would like to see how the million will be split three ways and how long it will last once the spotlight of the case is gone.

I wonder if the housing association is still with the same insurance company.  Any insurance company that would make a settlement like that should lose their license to do business.  That is clearly a fraudulent payment and should be investigated for kickbacks etc.  Yes, I know insurance companies are only interested in the bottom line and think they nearly always come out ahead if they settle before a trial.  These settlements only insure that future claims of this type will be made and so goes one more facet of the legal system.

I can't wait until somebody steps up, and wants to dig up Travon, and do a DNA test, claiming he's the father. Claiming who the real father is, is like getting your hand in a buzz saw, and trying to figure out which is the sharpest tooth! gypsyman

HEH, I hadn't thought of that, more lawsuits, more money for child support. I wonder how many mothers will come forward now that his parents have a few bucks, they too may try the hoa. POWDERMAN.
