What would these wheels work for?
« on: April 04, 2013, 04:22:34 AM »
Just got some freebies, thinking about using the small ones to make a mortar carriage (bowling ball) that I can roll onto and off of my trailer.  Would be similar to a garrison carriage.  The large wheel I don't know, they are fairly rusty and don't know how much weight they would support.  maybe one of those multi barreled pieces.  9 barrels in a GB bore? each with its own lanyard?

Indy,
I'd lean those against the barn for decoration.  If I had a barn. :-\
If authenticity doesn't matter at all, use a pair of motorcycle tires.  They will at least roll easier.

About the only cannon I can think of that used steel wheels was the Boat howitzer but even for that these don't quite work.....
Mr president I do not cling to either my gun or my Bible.... my gun is holstered on my side so I may carry my Bible and quote from it!

I can't think of a thing to use them for.  That doesn't mean they don't have use.  Hang onto them. A use may come to you.

You could make a scaled copy of this original gun captured outside washington DC by the tenth Rhode Island Inf.

Think the wheels aboue 46-48 in.

Interesting piece in post no. 4, barrel is a bit like an Ellsworth, isn't it?  If not an Ellsworth, what is it, and some specs pls if you have them.

Think this is the only other picture I have. The gun is a pre-war Militia gun of 2' in lenght and 2.125 bore. Hammer and cap fired. The Rhode Island guys called it the Tennalytown (?) gun.

No doubt referring to Tenleytown, an historic neighborhood in NW Washington DC, very close to the MD state line.

Correct.   Apparntly there were 3 such small guns in the DC / Baltimore area that were collected from thier confederate owners. The 10th RI got this one. I found mention of them in the OR's but don't know who got them.

You paid the right price.  Try to sell them and get some proper wheels for your cannon project.

I got them from my grandfather who used them on hay wagons on the farm where he grew up.  He was born in 1918 and two days after he gave me those wheels, (and I posted this thread) he passed on in the same house he was born in.  I don't think these wheels are going anywhere anytime soon.   Been a long weekend with the funeral but I will try to get these things back up to par and hopefully they will last another 100 years.
