Remington Rolling Block
« on: April 18, 2013, 12:00:15 AM »
I have a 7X57 Rolling Block that is a bit over a hundred years old. It is very accurate and fun to shoot. The last time I took it to the range I noticed some of the primers in the spent cartridges had holes in them. Just to be on the safe side I quit shooting the rifle.
Anybody know what the problem may be and how to fix it?

Where the shells that had pierced primers reloads or factory .  If they were handloads change to a different brand , try Winchester or CCI.  Check the firing pin for damage and also how far it protrudes when the back end of the pin is flush with the breech block face, it should not be anymore than the thickness of a penny about .055 .  Also todays factory loads are quite hot loaded for the early rolling blocks and there firing pin tip diameter and the hole thru the breechblock may be enlarged.

Thanks jedman. I check the hole in the breechblock. I have seen smoke come out of the action once.

Do you think there is any danger of using S&B or PriviPartizan ammo?

7mm RRBs are known for having oversize chambers that may leave you thinking you have head space problems.  Mine only likes ammo from a nolonger existant east european nation that sold under the Hanson brand name.  Good luck.

I have used the S&B ammo in 7 X 57 R in another type of rifle with no problems  but thats not your gun. You didnt say if this was the brand of ammo that was giving you the trouble.
