Can't afford bronze project
« on: April 06, 2013, 05:17:55 PM »
This will be a wood project that will be painted bronze. Will be a sitting lion with a cannon barrel coming from its mouth, golf ball size. This is the pattern.

Cutout pattern

Material 17" x 8'

I think you need to fatten that lion somewhat so the bore wall in the belly area has some thickness.  Using the bore lines shown would be dangerous.  Also, you would want a uniform muzzle in the lion's mouth.

GG, The plan is to have the bottom of the barrel to end at the shoulder. There is a line across the lion's mane, although it's hard too see. The body will be 7.5" wide in that area, white oak construction. The barrel will be 2.5" dia. x 7.25 long, bore 1.72" x 3.75" long, powder chamber .625 dia. x 1.25 long, and come out about .25" past the nose. Lots of things to hash out yet. Thanks...... Gary

Gary,
Obviously, you are going to have to carve this.  You must already have some carving skills as this would be a pretty tough first project.
I have never tried carving but I have great interest.  Please post a lot of pictures of the process.

Here is the board with the pattern tracings. The board is 1" thick, 8 pieces.

The first 4 pcs. are glued together as the middle mass of the lion. These 4 pcs. have the legs removed.

ZULU, Yes there will be a lot of carving and sanding. I have a set of wood gouges and chisels, but I have only done one relief carving, making a head and foot boards for my bed and that was over 20 years ago......Gary

I'm not much for carving...  but I had great success & realitive aclaim when I made up a couple of wooden revolvers for ranking PD members presented at their retirement party...  getting constable status as a perk.  (I think the speach went something like they could still come back & work with us...  here's your gun.)  I traced an actual gun & did most of it with a dremel.  I heard one recipient had it displayed on his mantle.  I should have taken pictures...

Very cool !

Is it going to be mounted to something to keep it stable ? It will certainly be a keepsake to be handed down !

Good work. 8)

Started on the mouth. I drilled a 1/4" pilot hole about 10" deep. I put the long bit in my 2.5" hole saw and drilled out the mouth following the pilot hole.

Finished mouth.

Started some roughing out of right side of lion.

Gary the O.G., You are an expert carver, your cast cannons are first rate, artistic and beautiful. You have great talent! As for the lion, this is as long as I could make the base and get 8 patterns on the board. The base will be longer and wider when finished. Thinking if it should have wheels or not.

Flagman1776, I made a lie. I made a small gun cabinet  about 12" high with 7 hand carved rifles made with an xacto knife and sand paper. Lucky,I remembered to take pictures.

Forgot to mention the paw has 3/8" pieces added to each side for thickness.

Fortunate for me, they liked the workmanship & enjoyed the sense of humor or my junior status would surely have had me walking a solitary beat somewhere in the middle of the night!
