414 Supermag
« on: August 06, 2011, 03:28:51 AM »
Good morning   Anyone shooting a 414 Supermag out there ?  I know there are a few who shoot 414 Contenders but how about the Dan Wesson.
I have a 414 DW that I shoot a 265 gc with healthy doses of 1680.  When I next get back north there I will try some 280īs and larger if there is time.

Hi I shoot a DW 414SuperMag, It is my main whitetail gun when handgun hunting. On whitetails I have had good luck with the Sierra 170 JHP and Speers 210 Deepcurl.
Heres a pic, the gun orginally came with a 10" barrrel and fluted cylinder, but I sent it back to DW and had them fit a 6" comp barrel and unfluted cylinder. I also added a Trijicon red dot sight.

Greetings Dekker   Nice looking rig.  So far I have used only the iron sights on mine.  I went the heavy bullet route.  265 GC FN that I was using in my DW 41 mag.  Mainly used 1680 for loads.  No opportunity yet to pop a corn cruncher with it yet but I have no doughts as out of the 41 mag the boolit never failed to exit & cause severe damage.  The 414 adds 300+ FPS with the 8" barrel over the 41 8" barrel with the same bullet and 1680.   Another fellow 414 shooter suggested I try 5744 also with heavy loads.  Will give it a try next time up north there.
That red dot sight would sure simplify the sighting issue on a moving critter.  Going to have to look into one.
Good to hear from you.   Mike

Hi Mike, my DW 414SM is a first issue gun that I picked up several years ago. I also have a custom 14" MGM encore barrel. My main go to powder for this caliber is Hodgen's LIL Gun. If this powder is available in your area you might give it a try. The red dot sight is easier for me to use than irons in hunting situations and the encore barrel has a fixed 4x Leupold scope and I like that combo for more accurate shots past the 100yd mark.
It's good to see another 414SM shooter

Good morning
I have a bunch of 1680 still but will put LIL GUN on my list.  I can see the advantage of the dot sight.   I use a Redfield 2x on my hunter revolver. I hunt mostly river bottoms and that dot would sure be easy to pick up on those dark early mornings.  I have had to wait more than once to be able to see the cross hairs.
Last gun deer I popped was with the .375SM  as I did not get my work done with the 414 in time... stuff always creaps up getting in the way of range time.  I should have just used the 414 as the deer was only 15 yards away.  I wish I would have had the funds to buy 10 before DW stopped production... sure would have bbeen a great investment.

What is your 1680/265GC load??  I have been trying to find heavy bullets laods for my Contender barrel in 414.  I know 296 is NOT ideal, but that is the only data I have.  I have 6-8lbs of WW 680 for my 357 Max and 445
