Reline 30/30 to 25/35?
« on: February 22, 2013, 07:45:22 AM »
I want a Marlin (or a Savage 99) in 25-35.  They're hard to find at a reasonable price.

Is it practical to get a used Marlin 30-30, and have it relined (or rebarreled) to 25-35?  Do you know anyone who does this kind of work?

Wow, I thought I was the only one who wanted to do this.  I wish someone would help us out.

Would be an easy reline for a smith that does reline work..Extractor'n'bolt would not require any additional work and the lifter would probly serve alright also..
Discussed this with an ole smith(departed :'( ) 'e said it would be one of the simpler conversions...Am considering doing same to a handi-rifle one of these days as it would be even simpler than the marlin..Order a Redmonds liner..drill the barrel out..epoxy liner in...ream the chamber...cut'ncrown..go shoot'im.. :)
Takes a lots more boma bucks to buy a liner nowadays though.. :(

Which would be cheaper? Re-line or Re-barrel?

I want one too.

You don't reline for high pressure cartridges. After the chamber is cut there won't be any thickness left to the liner. A rebarrel is not a big deal, and would be the way to go in this case.

Funny, I am in the same boat - I have a Savage 1899 that was originally a 30-30, and at some point got rechambered to 300 Savage. But the bolt and magazine are still original, and it really doesn't work right as a 300 Sav. So I am going to build a new barrel for it, and am wrestling with the option of 30-30 or 25-35. I have the 30-30 reamer on hand, but a 25-35 sounds like it would be a neat trick so I haven't decided yet.

Making a barrel for your Marlin would be nothing difficult, just takes more time than a bolt gun barrel because of the way the breech is machined and adding the dovetail and sight cuts. But otherwise everything else would stay the same.
