H&R drills the rear sight holes too deep for a .35 cal on the superlight barrel, they're .200" deep on my .243W!!  My 9.3x62 was done on a slick barrel Superlight.

i was just looking at my 20inch .223 barrel. it came with open sights and d&T for scope mount. i think this is a superlite? this is the barrel H&R should have chambered in .357 instead of the boat anchor profile it comes in. probably be cost prohibitive to have it re bored and chambered... but what a nice idea.

  I wonder if it might be more effective to have a 357 barrel recontoured. Turn some dead weight off the outside of the barrel.  How to deal with the forend stud is an issue, but if you want a leaner barrel in 357 I would think it easier to turn the outside than to rebore the inside.  Maybe, maybe not, just thinking out loud.

I'd have to say definitely if you have access to someone with a decent lathe.  Octagon would be cool also.  I'm fluting my .357 stubby and then tapering from the end of the fore end to the flat at the muzzle end a little.  At the same time, on the top solid, I'm adding drill tap holes for mounting a front sight from a standard front sight to add irons to it.    This process should leave all the chamber and essential strength at the rear alone while dropping about a pound off the barrel weight give or take.

Quick those octagon barrels look good. Did you leave the barrel round where the for end goes on, or are they full octagon?

They're full octagon ahead of the chamber swell.

Tacklebury, fluting the .357 is a great idea to shave some of that absurd weight. my rifle is 30 1/2 inches overall and still is nose heavy with laminate pw stocks! please post pics of your barrel when done. I really need to find a local machinist.
