Hammer Spur
« on: April 25, 2013, 04:08:14 PM »
I know this has most likely been discussed, but when I try to do a search I am told I am not allowed to search post on this forum. Chime in on that if you know why. My question is this, on a factory H&R hammer spur, does the opening supposed to be on the stock side or recvr side?

I think most tend to position their spur on the underside of the hammer to minimize the effect on the speed of the hammer fall.  The slower the hammer the more likely you are to get the dreaded ftf (fail to fire).

I mount mine with the opening on top towards the receiver which helps a little with scope clearence.

I mount all of my H&R factory "extensions" on the hammer spur with the opening up, sometimes that makes the difference in having enough clearance for the scope so higher rings aren't needed.   A hammer "spur" is the knurled part of the hammer.  ;)

I've only got one handi with a scope, and I mount it the same a quickdtoo does. I even thought about  taking a half round file to the the opening side and relieve the portion that faces the butt of the rifle for maybe a 1/16th of an inch more extra clearance. It's a shame the hammer spur comes too tall from the factory.
