Why are Freedom Arms Revolvers FIVE times the cost of Ruger??
« on: February 21, 2014, 10:14:09 AM »
I have only handled them, never shot them.  I just wonder how (and why) a FA revolver is at least five times as expensive as a similar Ruger?

I am sure they are better, but that much?

I appreciate good tools, and I can afford good tools.  I am just wondering is all.

Take care

I shoot and enjoy both.  I don't think there is a better value on the market than a Ruger Blackhawk or Super Blackhawk.  Ruger makes a very good revolver at a reasonable price.  The quality control you get for that price is generally acceptable.  Lots of small measurements on Rugers vary from gun to gun as does timing and accuracy.  If a particular revolver doesn't shoot up to your standard you can let it go or try to fix it.  Most Rugers will shoot less than 3" at 25 -- less than 2" at 25 is common.  This makes most folks quite happy.

Freedom arms pays extreme attention to material quality, workmanship and mechanical detail.  This minimal tolerance fitting is not needed in a typical working revolver but does result in almost guaranteed accuracy. Less than 1" at 25 is typical for a model 83.  They are not a bargain unless you compare them to a full blown custom package. An equivalent gun by Hamilton Bowen will cost more.  The service after the sale is outstanding.  If you have any issues with your gun you can talk directly to the head gunsmith who will work hard to take care of you quickly.

If you're a really great pistol shot you may be able to outshoot a Ruger.  This won't happen with an FA 83.  In fact, you'll probably need a good bench and scope set up to see how accurate it really is.

Don't get me wrong here-I like Rugers and my wife and I own many.
BUT-If you think that a Ruger is anywhere close to an FA in material(17-4 PH, SS)along with the close tolerance fitting and workmanship of the FA. Please do more research......
The Super tight QC along with the manufacturing and fitment that FA does comes at a price.
Think of Ruger as a Timex watch-
Then, think of the FA as a Rolex.

I never said that.  I do know that my Rugers have taken a beating for thousands of rounds and went to hell and back and keep ticking.  Their materials seem to be fine.

Are you concerned about passing this onto your great, great, great grandkids?  Why does it need to be made from a supposedly better steel than Ruger?  What is better about it?  Isn't this just justification for spending too much for a status symbol like my BIL and his beamer?

I know that my Honda Accord has needed exactly one alternator in the past 14 years.  His Beamer, needed tune up after tune up, this and that, and it has been sold years ago.

I have several out of the box S&W pistols that will shoot less than 1" at 25 yards without a machine rest, just a regular rest.  They will outshoot almost every AK and SKS at 100 I have shot.  The S&W is not built as strongly as a Ruger though.  And a S&W costs almost twice as much as a Ruger does brand new.  Can't imagine paying thousands of dollars for something like this that might shoot an inch better at fifty yards.  That is just me.

I am sure they are a better product in every way.  That is their niche.  Nothing wrong with exploiting a niche.  Wish that I could justify one, I just can't.

Whatever pulls your trigger.... 8) Why does one buy a Corvette, when a VW exceeds the speed limit?
How's that old say'n go?--"If I have to explain, you'll never understand".  ;D

My Freedom Arms is the finest fitted, most accurate  'production' handgun I have ever owned.
I take great pride in ownership of this FA. ;)
I have also beat the heck out of my Ruger Vaqueros shooting SASS for the last 10+ years.
Both Ruger and FA have great customer service.
Why do folks feel they need to 'justify' a purchase?  ::)  Life is just to dang short.

Groo here
The FA 454 cost because of the fitting required to hold the pressures generated by the 454 mag [ 65000 and up I have some that break 80000]
The ruger [except the super red hawk that is larger] will not do this.
The gun was designed for the 454 and later chambered for "lesser" rounds because of demand.

This is why...

100yards, 6inch, 475Linbaugh FreedomArms83 2x leupold... shot standing, resting over the hood of my truck.

You could buy 10 Rugers and still not be able to do this with one of them at 100 yards.

The high shot was my fault because I let the grips hit my wrist-bag and the revolver went high as the shot broke...I'm pretty sure the hole just a little left in the crows beak and the one .375" low was my shooter error too. The revolvers shoot Exactly where they're pointed.

Since they have a 12month backlog, it seems quite a few guys believe buying just one "Perfect" FA is bargan compared to buying 5 mediocre (at best) Rugers..,,yeah I have lots of Rugers...but the FA is no comparison.

Is it really nessasary to be able to hit a 6" crow 3 times in the head at 100yards with a handgun?,,well I guess not, but it sure is nice to know your gun is up to the task if you decide you want to. ;D

You know you want one...better get on the list. ;D ;D

Some magazine did a test on a fa 252 a while back, they held 1" also but at 100. Not bad for a 22

I don't own a factory revolver except FA. I have a bunch of smiths, all worked and custom (Davis, Glenn , schmidt) etc they are awesome.

Nothing wrong w factory stuff, I just like things as good as they can possibly be. For my 4 or so FA, other than adding a scope, there is nothing that I can improve upon

I think u are right when u say,

"I am sure they are a better product in every way. "Niche and such.

U can't justify it, fine with me. Lumpy is right. There isn't a need. It just is what it is.

Edit
Wait, I do have one colt king cobra but that was a wedding present, so one factory revolver

I think all the previous reponses are on point and from members with more experience than myself but Im gonna take a sec to give my impression. Regarding your question of price, think about the scale of operations. The labor hours that go into design, construction, and hand fitting that you probably visualized when you handled that Freedom. There's a video online that shows the life cycle of their products. The view is limited but it give you an idea of the simplicity of their operation . It at least doesn't appear to be heavily automated--or at least the ratio of man hour to machine--is probably greater than a large scale operation. That translates to higher costs when you consider their finished product output relative to the companies you referenced. Aspects of the operation like insurance and warranty don't cheapen

Plus it's pretty cool to call and have the few gals and guys you speak to know you. Bob and Wayne have always been real patient with me. As an enthusiast,  this is precisely the kind of company one should support--if you can

Also, consumers who have supported Freedom Arms value not just their ability to print tight groups. If you'd like, I  can show you a copy of their pricing brochures over the years.

My retirement investments, products solely designed to appreciate, are down about 3% for the year. Guess what hasn't gone down. Yup, those earlier Freedom Arms purchases. Its ensuring to know that if you're in slump you can convert your Freedom to cash quickly without losing your principal. Sounds odd, but you rejoice when you see them commanding high prices . 7-12 month build times tell you something about the strength of their branding, product interest, and the likelihood price could increase in the future.
