Male of Female?...
« on: May 10, 2013, 12:34:42 PM »
Been seeing many turkeys at my shooting range, but one has an exceptionally red head...

Can't see a beard on it...

Is it male or female?...

Thanks...BCB

So, the bright red head is not a distinguishing factor for a male bird or a female bird?...

Both sexes can have red heads?...

Thanks...BCB

without seeing the size, other coloration, or tail, it is tough to tell sex and/or age.  However, in this case I would lean towards a jake.  they can have deep red heads.  seems like the birds I hunt here in WI, will transition from red to blue/white heads on the toms as they get older.  toms will also have a darker body with iridescent feathers vs. the dull, flat colors on a hen.
