Dee, did someone replace your coffee with decaf?   ;D
I just want him to wear two cameras.  One facing forward and one on his face.  So we can see his face as he realizes that one ton hunk of mean mussle wants to kill him and comes.
I would just feel sorry for the PH that has to risk his life to save him.
I have read in a few magazines the passing of a few PH's  this past season as they have tried to save the clients and were gored and stamped by a Buffalo.
If it were gust going to be him, I would say fine but he is going to put a PH  and his staff in danger with his stunt.  Use the proper gun for the proper game.
And yellow tail no one is saying a 30-30 is not a proper round for Elk.  Some have said there could be better choices depending on where you hunt and how long you have to hunt.  If I have a season, to hunt and had a 30-30 I would carry it.  If I have a week I am going with something that will give me the best chance of success at all ranges I am able to shoot.    Now if that is the only gun I own, maybe a different story.  Maybe if I have a Royal hanging on my wall, a challange could be in order like hunting with a handgun.  But you would not set out after a grizley bear with a 38 Special 4" model 10. It will work but you would have a better chance with something larger and more powerful.  And saying you want ot use a 30-30 on a cape buffalo is similar to hunting a grizley here armed with a 38 special.

Ph? Who said anything about a ph? He should do this himself. The ph c an find the bull then go back to the pickup. As far as cameras, I'll just wait on the Sunday paper.

"A 200-300 yd shot is more typical out here in NM and CO.  A 30-30 does not cut it"

Here in western Washington Elk only come out of the timber to feed at night. Most Elk here are shot under 50 yards in the dark timber.

I've hunted in Colorado for 23 years and killed about a dozen elk. My longest shot was 100 yards, most under 50. i guess it just depends on what kind of terrain you like to hunt. It's rare to have 50 yards of visibilty in the deep woods.

CO. G & F says the average shot on an Elk is 160 yds.  This includes Cow and MB.  I'd speculate the average Cow shot is under 100 yds and the average MB is over 200 yds.  A trophy Bull may be over 300 yds.

Unfortunately, a PH is legally responsible for their clients safety......they can be held criminally liable for the lack of the  clients safety.

So they both need to use 3030s. Then the PH won't have to worry.

Most of my deer are killed with a 336 in 30-30... the rest fall to muzzleloader, Mosin, and bow.

I've never hunted elk, though I'd like to. I'd take the 30-30, if I expected sub-200 yard opportunities. But then, I'm an optimist: if someone will pay the freight, I'll demonstrate how effective the Marlin is on Cape Buffalo!
I'll go with ya, with my Marlin
BTW-( My Marlin is a 45/70)
And ya gotta promise you won't say anything about Obama or muslims when we are out in the bush.!! ;) ;)

Who said anything about a .45-70?  It's a .30-.30 we are talkin about.

Now the 30-30 is a great round, it has taken a lot of game, but the Cape Buffalo is a little out of it's class.  Granted you may want to make the fight a little more fair between the hunter nad the game and a 30-30 will definatly do that.  As a stoping rifle your 45-70 too will be a little under gunned.  While the hot loaded 45-70 reaches the bottom end of the 458 Wim Mag loads.  Think about that.  It reaches the bottom end of the 458 loads.  Stopping rifles use the Top end of the 458 Win mag.  And that is like saying that the 38 Special can reach the bottom end of 357 Mag, it does not reach the upper end that has made the 357 what it is known for.
Your best bet with your 45-70 is to shoot Yellow tail after he wounds the buffalo and make it quick and painless and have him do the same for you as the grumpy buff charges.   ::)

Check out www.garrettcartridges.com to see how their 45/70 loads in the marlin compare to the 458 Winchester round.
I think I'd rather have a fast lever action in 45/70 before I would a bolt action if a mad bull was coming at me through the brush!!!!.
And with the garrett heavy load in 45/70 I think I'd be better armed.

Garrett does make some devastating rounds, but I think the .45-70 is still my backup gun.  But then I'm going .500 or .600 Nitro.
