Chronograph "GREENIE"

    I have never been associated with a ballistic chronograph and now that I'm faced with getting one I need to seek some information. I looked at prices and saw prices of Chrono -greens @ $80 up to an Oehler setup @ $ 500+. I also noted that there were system levels containing more and more accessories. It looked as if the basic Chronys had an on-board  circuit box and others were connected by an extension wire to gain some space to the instrumentation. There were printers offered [ at extra cost ] and it made me wonder if the non printer setups were limited in capacity. That about covers my quandary and I would greatly appreciate some enlightenment. Thank  you ,  kody

     I can't speak of the high dollar chronys, but I have a Shooting Chrony F1 which is about $100 [mine was free, even better]. Nothing fancy at all about it, will only show the speed of each shot. No memory, printer, nothing. But I know how to use a pen and paper. I only use it when working up a load and I just write each load down on paper, then jot down the speed after each shot, I can figure the rest out later. I see no sense in spening a few hundred dollars for what I can do on paper for free.

I have been using the basic Chroy since they came out. Figured at the time I would use it and see what it added before spending the extra on something better. So now some years later, I still use the original red one but added a beta to go with it. It has the cord and the readings are stored. I still do as mentioned and just write down the shots as I shoot them.

What I HAVE done however is to set up the older one down range and use the newer one at the bench. Usually when I am working up a load for a rifle I put a 24X scope on it so I know I am getting the best accuracy I can from the load and rifle. It's pretty easy to read the numbers of the older chrony at 1-200yds with the higher power scope. I can check both muzzle and downrange velocity then develop my drop charts.

While neither one may be accurate down to the last FPS, they are both much better than me using a stop watch to check the velocity with. They give ball park figures which are useful for working up loads and basic scope dope. They do have their draw backs, but for the price they are good enough for me.

I have the Oehler 35p.  You might want to read what the 35p does and compare that to the others.

I currently use a pact with a printer and memory. Totally unnecessary IMO but a few years back I was ready to upgrade from my original chrony unit and got into this one. dont remember what it costs but basically it does exactly what the last one did. just fancier and takes up alot more room. It is handy in the way it calculates my average velocity and shows my max spread. I believe it will even figure ballistic co-efficients too. Not sure on that one.
