Refinish or Touch Up on H&R's ?

Wondering how many have had to touch-up or chose to refinish their H&R's?  How about one of the new camo film dip processes?

Here is why I ask:
I was at the gun club last week shooting my Huntsman and the gun fell over from the loading rack,striking a stone,and leaving a dent/gouge in the forend wood. Took it home and next day decided to sand the area and touch it up. Mistake!.......The factory finish seems to be one of those stain/final finish-all-in-one polys. Found that the stain seemed to be more topical and not deep penetrated into the wood, like a typical stain.

Aside from this,the walnut color of my Huntsman seems to have kind of a purplish overtone to the color when viewed in the daylight. Hmmm!

I ended up stripping the entire forend and putting three applications of Minwax Special Walnut on the bare forend, but certainly not a perfect match to the stock. Best I could do for now,... and putting 3-4 coats of  Minwax Wipe-On Poly (clear satin ) for final finish. Love that stuff. :grin:

Looking into the Camo Film Dip Process, but to do the stock and forend would run about $120.00 + pack and ship. :x  Yikes,..more than the gun cost!

primer, It looks as if it would be better to refinish both the buttstock and forearm to get them to match than to pay $120.00 plus shipping for that camo dip you mention. Cheaper to buy a new set of stocks for that price!!! Better still if you want camo, paint the wood!!!....<><.... :grin:

Now I don't know if these rumors are actually true but I have read that H&R is now producing Huntsman forends in a laminate stock.  You will want to call H&R to confirm but that is the rumor.  If that was the case I would buy a camo laminate monte carlo stock and a matching forend to boot.  Sure would look sweet if the rumor is true...

Good points,all.  It's a pretty close match, but easiest solution would be to order a new forend, as you recommended. Have also entertained refinish of the stock and may end up going that route. At least I would know that I could get a fairly good match.  :grin:

The maple(?) used by H&R is a little touchy with the stain. Seems to be some softer grain mixed in the wood that takes the stain unevenly.
Oh well, like you said, could also air brush a camo pattern onto the gun.....If I get up the nerve and energy. :roll:

Thanks!   Sounds like a great idea. I have the 12 ga Ultra with laminate and have always liked it a lot. Also, have finally decided to mount a scope on the Huntsman ,and the monte carlo is the way to go when I do.

Will call them and see what I can find out. :grin:

If you decide to go with a camo paint job, you might want to consider using Alumahide.  I've seen some AR's done up with this stuff and it looks pretty good.  It's supposed to be pretty durable and fairly easy to apply.

Thanks for the info and link! Will check it out and may give it a try when I pull the stock and figure out what pattern to try. Would make a interesting back-up/or replacement for sure. :grin: Just not overly thrilled with the stock the way it is,.....that much I do know.

Excellent Primer...I may be taking that path too...I would opt for a camo laminate stock with the matching forend.  Although I want to outfit my Ultra Slugger with laminate stocks first and maybe the Huntsman will come later.

I always thought the butt stock on my Pardner looked like a club so I removed it, and shaped it down to a more graceful shape (in my opinion of course  :wink: ) by thinning out the wrist, and removing the pistol grip.  I also thinned down the fore arm to resemble a splinter forend.  I wound up with an English style stock that I get positive comments about by fellow shooters.  If you get your new camo stock installed and get bored you might want to try this on your old butt stock then at least the finish will match your forend.   :lol:

Interesting modification. If you have a dig camera, maybe you could post a pic of your handiwork. :grin:  Would be fun to see.
Mine being a muzzleloader, maybe the stock could be reshaped to mimic a Penn. or Ohio halfstock,....with inlayed patchbox. :roll:  Hmmmm.

Also, since you brought it up, would be interesting to possibly reshape the grip area to resemble something like the Pardner Pump has... or at least add more contour to that (club like) area of the stock. :)
