Andy Russel

Anybody remember the writings of Andy Russel?  ;D I have all his books at my oldest daughters in Anchorage. Got to thinking I need to get her to mail them to me here in Florida.  ;) most of the current generation of outdoor writers just don't compare with guys like Jack, Andy, & Elmer.

Not familiar with Andy Russel.

Could you be thinking of Russell Annabell?  I remember his stories from Outdoor Life, Sports Afield, Field and Stream, and others.  They were the best, he could make you feel like you were right there with him.

You're right, there were some really gifted writers back in that era.  The hunting stories really conveyed the "feel" of the hunt, unlike most of today's writers who slip in a plug for some gadget in every other sentence!

A few you didn't mention:  Gene Hill, John Jobson, Pete Brown, Grits Gresham, Skeeter Skelton, John Wooters, Byron Dalrymple, Warren Page, and some others I can't think of right now.

Back then I read every issue cover to cover, now it's rare to find more than 1 or 2 interesting articles in each issue.

Yes spruce your right. Been so long I forgot his right name and didn't have his books here to reference. Many times I long to return to those long ago days of gifted writers.  ;) Skeeter was still alive when I moved to Silver City, NM but I never got to meet him even though I only lived a few miles from him in his last years. I've been in Allen's Saddle shop in Silver many times. It was one of Skeeters hang outs. But their all gone now.

Some good outdoor writers mentioned there!Back before outdoor magazines became one big Ad. How about the the "Parting Shot"? Was that one Pat McManus? I loved old Rancid Crabtree and Retch Sweeney.
There has been a few I would like to forget ............Like Jim Zumbo ;)

Grits Gresham(what a name) was one of my favorites.
