45 70
« on: March 12, 2013, 05:47:41 AM »
Wondering what diameter the TC 45 70 barrels are slugged at? Are they pretty much a standard .457? or does the bore diameter vary some, in these barrels?
I have one coming but it's not here yet......... Wondering if the .457 cast boolits I have on hand will be too small.

Thanks.

I've had 4 different TC factory barrels and shot .458 cast in all of them quite accurately.  Don't think you'd have a problem at .457.  Ah...the 45-70 Mild to Wild...Yooouur're gonna LOVE it!!! ;D

In my 24" factory barrel I used to size to 459 and have gone to 460.

In my 12" I've got 1775 fps with the Hornady 300 jhp using 4227 and 1691 with 325 cast FNGC using 680.
In my 16 1/4" the 325 FNGC does 1994 using RE7 and the Rem factory 300 gr.JHP does 1789. so I'd say yes, you should be able to get 1500 with a 350.  H08

Thanks for the replies.

I slugged one of the 12" 45 70 barrels at .458 and the other at .459

I ended up getting a custom mold made for the throat of one of the barrels. It drops the boolits at .461, so sizing for either barrel won't be a problem.
