As evidenced by the number of firearms in private hands, there is already huge support for ownership in the US.  Outright gun ownership is only one side of the coin.  Responsible gun ownership is the other.  Until ALL firearms are in the hands of responsible owners, private ownership will be under attack in the interest of public safety.

One firearm-related crime is too many.  One firearms-related accident is too many.  There was a time when these exact words were part & parcel of NRA doctrine.  Sadly, the public no longer hears this message.  The NRA is now part of the "gun lobby", as if guns themselves had "rights" over the citizens who are affected by their misuse.

The  firearms-owning community has an image problem that will not be solved by shouting profanities while live firing at targets depicting elected officials.  Show some respect.  Clean up your collective act.  Otherwise, you are inviting those same officials to step in and do it for you.

Lizzie,  The NRA and others have had to take a hard stance because the people who write our laws are dishonest.  They will tell you one thing and do another.  If you give an inch they will take a mile.
The anti gunners by and large want total confiscation, that is their only goal.  They will take it in small bites if they have to.
 
I would love dearly to have honest men of integrity deal with the mental health issues, but if we give on that, we will all soon be mentally ill.

I think that we all need to clean up our image as gun owners, hunters, and politically...not saying we shouldn't fight and stand our ground but there is a hatred for the uptight, rich, white guys and so on... there is more to this fight than just guns. the republicans have generally always been on the side of the rich and the democrats for the unions and working man. whats sickening to me is that they have all chosen opposing sides on issues we should ALL agree on. D or R should not matter when it comes upholding the constitution and bill of rights. it should not matter when it comes to abortion or gay marriage. we are all AMERICANS and should stand together.. divided we will fall.. some people you will never get through to, but I have heard from some people who I know were more anti gun and hunting lately that been changing their opinions on everything after paying attention to the world and whats really happening... there needs to be change from within all of us to further improve pubic image and make it all  more acceptable to the average non-gun owner/hunter as a freedom and natural born right to choose. still there should be no end to the fight we bring to keep these rights. but just try and watch your manners and make your agreement for all of this more grown up and realistic then they expect to get. kill them with kindness. it wouldn't hurt to expand gun safety and hunter's safety classes for kids. they are the future.. and as well, self defense for women and reach out more to minorities. people in public office like sherriff clark in  Milwaukee are also a real asset.  jammer

The cause of preserving our 2nd Amendment rights are NOT helped by racist rants and paranoid pronouncements of sharia coming to a town near you from those in our own ranks. Calling the Pres a halfrican muslim brotherhood communist negro and calling his wife a negress doesn't move the ball an inch in our favor, on 2nd Amendment Issues. The repetitive, ugly anti-muslim rants we see from particularly prolific posters do not help our causeone bit, and make GBO vulnerable to the rep as an asylum of nutballs.

Yes, do take a kid hunting. Better yet, take a black kid hunting - we need more of those guys in the field, and on our side. Most of anti-muslim bigotry comes from peeps who don't know any muslims personally, but if you do - anyone here in Michigan? - take a Muslim kid to the range, and then afield during deer season. Make friends & allies where you can, even if they don't agree on everything.

For the percentages of shooters that shoot and curse the target as well as the criminals that commit gun crimes, the  percentages are small of the population of shooters or gun owners. Reasonable people realize this fact. The media and politicians like to manipulate the public with fear and they stir up the people that have chosen to live in fear. The politicians and media know that laws won't stop criminals nor crazies, their wish is to remove guns from the populace because they fear the population will turn against the media and the politicians. it doesnt require an image. but there is an image that is wrongly percieved by anti gunners and hunters. all i'm saying is just try and talk to those who do not enjoy our freedoms as much with a little bit more courteousy and listen to what they say before you make your arguements against them. maybe i'm wrong. hell i dont know but we need as many allies as we can get at the polls thats for damn sure. we wont win any by force... my main thought on this is the kids though. hunters safety or firearms safety i've always believed should be a required course in public schools. it might turn more people on to the outdoors as well as enjoying our 2nd ammendment rights??? kids get gun safety in schools like this..... dont touch it, go tell a grown up, get away from it.. blah blah.... thats all fine and good but curiosity kills the cat every time. kids need to be taught HOW to handle and shoot a firearm safely. not scolded for being interested or curious.. hell i taught my step son to start a fire the right way as well as shoot safely and guess what? we never had a house fire, never had an accident. he supervises me when we're out and even when he was 6 was a better example of a safe handler than some grown ups at the range! he was taught. he was allowed to feed his curiosity and learn th right way as well as have some damn fun and shoot some stuff. its fun, it's why we do it right? i'll tell you something else. when he watched his first birds and animals die from a bullet and arrow he understood how serious an accident could be. first hand... many kids dont get that and its no wonder we're heading down the road we're on now. they are the future. simple.. jammer

Then we certainly need to improve our image as DOCTORS , as DRIVERS , as POLITICANS, as all of them cause people more harm as do many other activities. Some talk about no death by gun is the only acceptable number. Then why should any death by the others be acceptable ? Either we are free or not. A free people can chose what they do. If they choose something that kills them it's their fault not the object they used. If they use the gun to kill another then it is their fault not the guns. We can discuss kids killing kids with their parents gun and demand more control on guns but that would be people control. The stupid are as free as the smart or we are not free.
Better to teach your kids about guns and respect for them. To teach self respect and respect of others . The gene pool will clean itself whether with guns, electricity , poor driving skill, jumping in cold water , falling off cliffs or picking fights with bigger guys while consuming a can or 12of whup azz.
