Need Advice on New AR or MINI
« on: May 06, 2013, 04:53:04 AM »
Hi All,

I live in the People's Republic of Maryland where they just passed an AWB effective Oct. 1st 2013. I've been thinking about getting and AR or Mini 14/30. I like the Ruger's better but really know nothing about any of them (I'm mostly a hunter / handgun shooter). Things I'm concerned about are accuracy, reliability, and price (I'd like to stay under $1000 if possible). And I've heard the newer Mini's are a lot better in these areas (except price). So what's the best bang for the buck? Any opinions? ;)

The longer you wait the closer to your budget you will come. The longer you wait the closer to the end of the panic you get, and the rising prices...

Consider an out of state sale to get a more reasonable price if it is feasible. If all of the Barbie doll addons are going to be illegal then the Mini is at a more equal footing. Accuracy wise the AR is going to kick the Mini's ass all day and twice on weekends. But will it really matter? Do you want to shoot quarters or pop cans? Mounting a scope on the AR is simple, don't buy the old school carry handle model and all is well.

The Mini can be had with a wood stock. when they get around to banning black and plastic you'll be golden. You know Ruger makes a fine AR don't you?

Here in Va. there are AR's under 900 bucks on the shelf now. I'm not sure but most times you can buy a long gun in a state that touches yours so unless there are other laws you may be able to cross in to Va. and get a gun . GreenTop ( saw them last week) has them and they are just down I-95. There are other stores that also have them now. Call before you drive down to be safe.

if you want to hit something go with the ar. There priced about the same, both are reliable if fed good ammo and the ar is hands down a more accurate platform.

I like the feel and balance of a mini, but don't own one because I refuse to own a gun that doesn't put the bullet at least in the near vicinity of where I point it.  I had a friend that had his smithed and he went from 4" groups down to about 2.5".  My AR shoots better than that with cheap ammo.  In fact, my M1 carbine is more accurate than a mini.

M1 carbine over the Mini Ammo is cheaper now too :-)

An advantage of a AR is you can change out the upper for 300 whisper, 16 "carbine or 20 bull barrel ETc,  also.

shame the mini lacks accuracy as good as the AR. It is more robust, easier to clear a jam and less complicated.
That said AR magazines are more plentiful and less expensive and far easier to add bells and whistles  ;D
