My kids tell me I'm a hoarder and threaten to do an intervention. I maintain that I am frugal. Whatever the case I am not a panic buyer, but over the years I have accumulated more ammo and reloading supplies than I will probably ever use. The local pawn shop here will pay $40.00 for bulk 550 packs of 22 rimfire.

An avid shooter/hunter/reloader will usually have sufficient stock, I never said "enough", as I believe when it comes to "coffee, ammo, grandkids", you can never have "enough"! I guess I just resent the "doomsday" type of purchasing. Maybe its because I survived the "Survivalist Movement" of the late '70s. lol. I saw many folks in fear back then, got caught up a bit in it, though I finally realized that I could never really be self sufficient in my circumstances, though being in Hurricane country, I was raised to have a couple weeks of everything needed.
One really big concern I have with what is going on is the proper storage of all this stuff. The majority of people aren't prepared to safeguard ammo against a housefire, which the News will say "Preppers house held an arsenal", huge explosion". Or burglars get the weapons/ammo, and suddenly the gang bangers have more lethal handguns/rifles than they do now. Most punks use a POC Lorcin, or some other junk, with mismatched ammo, or even pocket 22s, .25s.  I suspect Glock 9mms or .40s will make the rounds now. Granted, an SKS or shotgun is bad enough to go up against, but I wouldn't relish an AR/30rd sweeping a sidewalk.  Its a catch 22, I know, and a sign of the times, but I hate to see our own "side" create such a mess. Just ranting...

Well, to my mind there are horders and then there are ''boy scouts''.

I fall dead square in the later. I've bought exactly 3 100 rd boxes of sub-sonic 22lr ammo in the last several months.
I haven't had the chance to try them yet, but they'll probably last me several years.
Most of us that have been through this before had a ready stash, or as the BSA motto says "Be Prepared".
I don't know how anyone could accuse us of hoarding as that's a response to some other input.

Hoarders = someone who collect rediculous amounts of crap to feed an internal desire.
Gougers = Someone buying up a product to creat a false sense of need and to then sell at a profit.

bulk ammunition does not explode. each round will cook off separately. even powder will burn. now black powder is another matter. It will explode . You can get smokeless powder to 'explode' if you set it off in a tight container like a pipe bomb though it seem black powder is favoured for them.

My primer and powder supply is way down from when I was actively competing. If I didn't have 25K of SRP in stock I felt like I needed more. When shooting 40-50k rounds a year you always think in bulk.  I always used SRP in my 9x23W. I always bought powder in 8 lb. kegs.

Now being disabled I probably have enough primers to last the rest of my life.

Regarding the 'gang bangers'. They are punks and cowards. They only attack when they have overwhelming odds. In a stand up fight they would show themselves to be the cowards they are when they cut and run.

While i never was a hoarder, I have always kept myself well stocked.  Once this recent "Obama made shortage" was in place I kept my eyes open for opportunities.  Not opportunities to make unscrupulous profits, but opportunities to add to my stash.  I have perhaps 500 rounds of centerfire.. with reloadings for several hundred more.  The .22 LR rimfires, I always carried a couple thousand on hand.  My favorite gun shop got in some CCI standards..so I bought one brick of the 3 or 4 he had in stock.  I have recently bought a brick of CCI "Quiets".. so that puts me at about 5K .22LRs.  My .22 mags and .17 HMRs are a bit more iffy, with a couple or three hundred each.

I look at it this way..if the S does indeed HTF... and  brownshirts (or blue shirts) are sent out to kill & maim the people.... if any of the people have just one good rifle with a few rounds; ....then using camoflage & concealment learned in our hunting..they can soon claim a new weapon and a belt full of ammo! ;) ;D

Reading these I think there is a difference between Hording and having what you want or need.
Is it hording to have a months supply?  Is it hording to have a years supply?  Or it is just one time shopping and being frugal by buying in bulk?
Is it hording to beable to load every magizine you own twice or is it being well prepared?
Is it hording when you buy a years supply of Toilet paper at Cost co or Sam's club?
I watch the hording shows and those people save everything, and most of it is not useful and there is no rhyme or reason to having what they have.

When I was training a lot, it was recommended to use one case for training (replace when done) and one case for defense, minimum. I have no problem with that. Now that I don't shoot that much, I have enough to hunt with, etc. There have been guns I wanted but passed on because I knew ammo was impossible to find...Ruger Compact .338 RCM was one. Ruger Mk II was another, for now anyhow, ha.
And Ms Sharon, I meant to say "burn up", not explode. You can bet they always check out any hot spots for Arson...and theres all those 1lb cans! ha

A guy I work with was talking to someone that works at Dicks. He said they get ammo shipped in a couple times a week and there are 20-30 guys at the door when they open. They line up at the counter and buy everything that comes in. He also said that its pretty much the same 20-30 guys all the time. I would call that hoarding. I'm sure some of them are planning some gouging to go along with the hoarding.

Anything less than a life time supply plus enough to leave to your kids/grandkids is NOT hoarding it is just being properly prepared. So long as you have the funds to spare one should never pass up the opportunity to buy more at a reasonable price.

If you follow that plan you won't have to pay exorbitant prices or worry about having none to shoot during such periods of shortages. I've not bought a lot since things got scarce since I have adequate supplies on hand. I have however bought some items I found at normal prices that were things I will use.

I've had 10,000+ rounds of 22LR ammo on backorder since last year. I'm still waiting but I have it locked in at normal not scalper's prices and eventually it will arrive. In the meantime I have adequate supplies on hand to keep me and the grandkids shooting.

tobster, let your family hold an intervention. An intervention is to make the person see the error of his ways. Since it is your family and not you who are in error an intervention will have zero effect, as it should.
