I could use that big gun mounted in my truck! Only to excercise my second amendment rights of course.  ;)

I saw one at an air show. It was, by far, the most impressive plane I've ever seen. It wasnt just a fly by. The pilot did low altitude maneuvers and fired the gattling gun at a wooden model of a tank. Unbelievable. Very tight turning radius. Low speed capability so that it can stay close to its target. Lots of armor. It was the number one coolest thing I have ever seen at an air show.

Thats a cool video, but what I saw was cooler. If you ever get a chance to see one, do it. You will never forget it.

Seen it in it's testing stages at Gila Bend range in Arizona.  Then they were sent to Eielson AFB here in Alaska.  The Army had two old Nike Missle sites up in the hills above the base.  The sites were pickled, and one day some wires got crossed.  Two A-10s took out the sites.  Those Solid Poured Concreat walled buildings were totally distroyed.  Then I would go to Blair Lakes Gunnery Range to check and schedule maintenance on the buildings.  While there I got to watch them doing straffing runs.  The Warthog is an impressive aircraft.  I had a hard time understandijng why the nAF wanted to send them all to Davis Monthanon to be moth balled.  Then suddenly the AF changed their minds and kept them flying.

Found out later the Army had said every one the AF put in storage, the Army would pull and put back in operation.  the Army wanted it for close support of it's troops on the ground.

I remember one day my buddy and I were Sheep hunting down in the Alaska Range south of Eielson.  We heard something coming up the valley below us.  We turned and there just below us was two A-10s flying by.  They were lower than we were, we were looking down on them.  We waved as they flew by, and the pilots waved back.  They were so close it was like we could almost reach out and touch them.

And to think that the design is 40 years old.  :o

To put that in perspective, imagine a similar video filmed in 1980 with the narrator saying "The P-51 Mustang is still one of the best US fighters in current use."

Old design but a real killer. The plane is built around the gun. Air Force doesn't like them because they aren't super sonic. Infantry love them for the close ground support. Consider a round from the main gun and a tank is destroyed. I like them a lot.

Besides seeing them perform at airshows I have had the opportunity to observe a couple of them flying very low following every twist and turn of a creek. Also close to where I work is the Smoky Hills Bombing Range. Years back an A-10 shot up one of those big old time satellite dishes in a farmer's yard just off the range. I would guess the pilot has some explaining to do. They may be an old design but for many an Iraqi soldier it was the last thing they saw if they even saw it at all. B-52s are now past 50 years old and I sure don't want to be anywhere close to the receiving end of a BUFF.

guzzijohn:  You have to remind me how old I am.  I remember them testing the A-10 before it was announced.  Gosh that was a long time ago.  Wonder what all the Wetbacks thought when they were sneaking through Gila Bend back then, and an A-10 came through.

And the enemy guy said, "That wet brown spot is where I was standing when the Warthog popped over the hill..."

Back when we had Windows 95 there was a war video game in which you could fly one of those warthogs, shoot their gatling guns, rockets, etc.  You had to learn how read you instrument panel, radar screens, and to take-off and land too.  It was quite  exhilarating.
