Phoenix firearm "buy back"
« on: May 05, 2013, 11:38:29 AM »
yesterday was the first day of the Phoenix, AZ  so called  firearm 'buy-back' program. How one can "buy-back" something one never owned is beyond my ken.

I parked 5 cars back from the entrance. The first man I approached when I asked "are you selling?" replied with "not to you". How rude!  The second car had a woman of my age. She had a Remington Nylon 66 in the back seat and I stated so. She said "you recognized my grandfathers gun".  I told her I would give her $25 more than the gift certificate that was being offered. She agreed. So for $125 I had a nice .22lr semi auto, one I have wanted for years.

There were perhaps a dozen people with signs "cash for guns". they were mostly young men. I on the other hand am beyond 60, walk with a cane, was carrying an umbrella and was wearing a large straw hat  with am multi-color ribbon and tied on with a large bow. I would stop at each car, smile, say hello and engage the person in conversation, asking what they were selling. Most said things like 'oh, I would not sell this to you, it is junk' or 'it doesn't work'. What I saw were rusted shotguns (think about how long a shotgun must be neglected for it to rust to junk in a desert!), pocket pistols like lorcins that were broken, old off brand single actions with parts missing or broken. A very few people would look away to which I would say "have a nice day".  I always smiled, was polite and thanked the person for their time. The youngsters that were several cars ahead of me made a few purchases, very few.  I think most people were put off by their manner. I was rather intimidated by a couple. Not confrontational just the way they carried them selves.  After an hour and a half I called it quits. I had surveyed over half of the cars present and the young men were all the way to the end of the line.

So what did the tax payers get for their money? Oh I know the purchases were made with an 'anonymous' donation of $100,000, however there were 5 police SUVs and at least 10 police officers at this one location. The program operated at 3 churches.

For tens of thousands of tax payer dollars the police took in JUNK!  I am sure they will claim the program a success but it was a total farce.  No "assault weapon" were received. One man I spoke with was in line for over an hour, however for his time he received $200 in gift certificates to a major grocery store. Not a bad dollar per hour investment.

If I left after my first 15 minutes I would still have had a nice .22lr and not wasted over an hour. There were no 'little old ladies' selling their husbands collection of single action Colts or 1911s. No Thompson submachine guns.

Just JUNK and a waste of tax payer money.

I'm hoping they'll run one of those programs nearby... Chapel Hill or Durham would be good candidates, lots of gun-grabbin' sentiment there. I've got a POS J-22 I'd love to get fifty bucks for...
Jesus said we should treat other as we'd want to be treated... and he didn't qualify that by their party affiliation, race, or even if they're of diff religion.

Sumpn told me that was going to be the story SharonAnne. Glad you found that ole 66, though.

thanks Oldshooter. It is not pristine but probably would be judged between 'fair' and 'good'.  Definitely a shooter which is what I wanted.  I am a shooter, not a collector.  If I had found a 'collector' piece I would have purchased it with the intent to sell to a real collector rather than see it destroyed.

I doubt there will be another such program in Arizona. The legislature just passed a law that all guns purchased by police must be resold through FFL dealers to 'enrich' the state coffers. Since no firearms in future will be destroyed I doubt there will be another 'anonymous' donor of such a sum.

I am happy for those who got $100 per firearm for their junk.  A nice benefit for them and a big laugh to whoever put up the money.

I love telling this story.
Years ago they had a Gun buy back (I am convinced that these people think the governmetn ownes everything and they are giving you back the government money for the good) in Norfolk Va.
They were offering $50 a gun.  Did not matter what it was.  So the week before I was with my roomate and he was at a pawn shop in Hampton and I saw a guy buy a Raven 25 for $35 out the door with a box of ammo.
So I drove over there and bought 10 for $25 each, with NO ammo and went to the "buy back"  Handed in the 10 guns in the boxes, and in a lunch sack that they came in, got my $500 in grocery store money and showed my Drivers license.  Used the grocery $ to buy 10 kegs for a rugby house party, and the house paid me back for the beer.
Later some one complained and the buy back and that an FFL needed to be used ot buy the guns and it was deemed illegal and the guns needed to be returned to the people if they could be identified.
Later a State trooper showed up at the door, my roomate answered and the State trooper asked for me, my roomate threw open the door and said there he is get him.  The trooper made me sign for the reciept of the guns, I said I did not have the $500 to give them back and he said not to worry.   I them took the 10 guns back to the same pawn shop and sold them for $10 each.
I guess the selling them back to the pawn shop was a true gun BUY back.
And that is how I made $350 on a gun buy back that did not have the guns destroyed.

McW, awesome story.  If they persist in the "buyback" next week I think I will go shopping ;)

FPH, if you approached the old woman with the cane and umbrella we could have done lunch :)

FPH, you are most welcome.  Any time you are going to be in the valley send me an email and maybe we can do lunch or coffee.  GB folks are pretty good folks. There are many I would love to meet.
