Well a few of you know I was going on my first turkey hunt. Although my buddy along did fill his tag with a nice bird the only thing my H&R got to participate in was the taking of a coyote.
We were on our second set up and had just settled in good and He did a few clucks and maybe 10 minutes into our hunt we saw a coyote coming along the field. was coming straight at us so we couldnt move much while it came nearly 200 yds, it paused to sniff a clump of weeds 35 paces from us.... His single shot Winchester (full choke) and my H&R topper ( TY choke) both fired at once and it folded right there. Was very cool. He got his turkey, we got this coyote AND the steaks (beef from the store...not coyote steaks

) we did over the open fire were unbelievably good.
Maybe I will get one another year.... thejanitor

Thanks Tim! Now I know what I was doing wrong all those times I went coyote hunting with a rifle and predator calls... Turkey decoy and diaphram call and a shotgun... Simple

Any day you can take a turkey and send a coyote to the bone yard is a great day. I imagine the yote didn't even wiggle after you both clobbered him. Coming in on a turkey call has got to tell you something....best to get rid of the sucker. We always bring good steaks to camp for the first night. One time, turkey hunting in Florida, we killed a rattler while setting up camp and unloading canoes.....Thanks to our great camp chef and hunting partner, Joe Grecco, we had fantastic grilled Steak and Snake that evening....and NO, it doesn't taste like chicken.....It tastes like Rattle Snake.....good, all by itself.

Pete we were in my Ren dez vous tent with no floor so I really would change the whole camp idea if camp was where snakes are. But I would eat one just to say I had tried it.
I was quite shocked how the 4 shot knocked that coyote down.

I wouldn't be too surprised at the performance of the that #4 shot! Turkey shells are the hardest recoiling shotgun shells i have ever fired! 1 7/8 ounces of lead moving very fast in a super tight pattern is nothing to sneeze at! devestating at close range.

I have taken two yotes while turkey hunting... Same scenario, they came in one the run to the yelping/clucking and hen decoys... One went down like a sack at 45 yards with a 3 1/2" #5 turkey load and the other at 20 yards to the same load, a couple kicks both time and then nothing. Yeah, even #5 will get it done, if I could get a turkey sized load in 3 1/2" #2 or BB, I would use a shotgun more often for yotes. As it is, the KH's go out when hunting brush, .223's when it is mid-range and the .243's when we gotta reach out and touch them... And I am chewing on turkey jerky as I write this...
