New Buffalo Classic
« on: May 06, 2013, 08:48:19 AM »
Hey guys and gals just purchased a Golden Buffalo classic this morning. I am going to top it off with a Weaver v1-3. Any suggestions on Factory loads that have a history of shooting well in a Buff Classic?
I will try and post pics tommorow.

Not sure what a Golden BC is exactly, but be interesting to see your pics.  Remington 405 gr factory loads typically shoot well as do Hornady Leverevolution Ammo and Buffalo Bore's offerings also.  ;)

That's it Quick. I assume it is a 2006 model? It has a GB prefix serial number which isn't listed in the help section.
So far I have been pleased with the rifle. The barrel has the nicest blue job I have ever seen. I got the scope mounted, rings aligned, and bore sighted. We shall see tomorrow how it shoots. Still need to make a barrel band for it so I can mount the sling .

There is no real difference. I looked at several Buffalo Classics in my area, and this was the nicest one I Found. They were all the same price, so i picked this one up. I imagine most here would have done the same.

Removed the front sight to install my home made barrel band.........Man the sight would not budge.I tried a heat gun and penetrating oil. My brass punch was even peening the sight. Finally I broke out the Hacksaw cut the globe off and then cut a split down the center of the dovetail :o . I am not using it anyway, but ordered a blade style front sight that looks a little more correct to reinstall on it. Don't know if the dovetail cut is undersized or the front sight was oversized, but in combination they brought a new meaning to the phrase" Kung Foo Tight", or maybe Conan the Barbarian installed it. ???

There's a link in the FAQs on removing the sight, they're usually all tight like that, making sure the barrel is on a solid surface like a concrete floor, not in a vice that gives a little, has always worked for me.  ;)

I looked last night real fast in the Faqs, but missed it. I had the barrel on some pieces of 3/4 inch oak flooring flipped over so the grooves would hold the barrel. I was on my workbench, so that may have been absorbing some of the force. Tried tapping from both directions applied heat with my heat gun, and even tried a steel punch after the brass punch had already peened the side of the sight. That thing was in at a interference fit. It tapped out easily after I slit it enough to relieve some of the pressure on the side of the dovetail. The new sight will be measured to see how close it is. If it looks like it has the proper measurements, I am going to put the sight in the freezer over night, heat the end of the barrel with my heat gun and tap it in. It should work?

Freezing could make it brittle.  If you are leaving it overnight, just refrigerate it right up til you are ready to do it.  We used to throw wrist-pins in the snow for a while here and use a torch to heat the joint, so the wrist-pin was press fit.  If you have a good deadblow hammer, these help with a non-marring face.  8)

Left to right - out. Right to left - in. Firm rap with a mallet on the punch, it worked on the dozen or so that I have done.

Winchester's 300gr JHP's work great out of all my 45-70's.    They are probably the most consistent factory load of any cartridge/caliber I've used.

My favorite small critter/plinker is an old Trapdoor load.. 35gr. of 3031 and a 300 grain lead bullet..You can shoot it all day and still move your arm when your done.. 47gr of 3031 and a 405 gr lead bullet is also accurate in my BC and is semi-mild on the body.... Good luck..
