Woodchuck season is here...
« on: April 07, 2013, 05:04:07 PM »
Been seeing them out and about, so I decided to try my luck. Sure enough, this one peeked out early evening, 35 yards with the .410 shooting a Remington Slugger...DRT

It's on here in southern Michigan!

That's awesome!  I would have never thought to use a slug gun on woodchucks.

Thanks for the pics.

The woodchucks that would burrow in a meadow are gone here in New England!

The coyotes have chased them away.

That was the great rifle sport here.  An accurate rifle, lots of shooting, doing good for the farmer and good weather.

My favorite hunting.

Gone.

yeah we have a lot of yotes here also. i havent seen a chuck very far away from human habitation in years.they stay close to sheds, barns and hay yards where they can make a quick get away if a coyote shows up.

Your both right... Chucks are not seen too often thats for certain!!  Coyotes, well I shoot them on site too!!

I remember one of the last chucks I shot... I was after him most of one summer, he would tear up my garden and slip into the woods. One day My wife saw him slide down the hill behind the garden and called me. I went out the front door, ran down the road and up into the woods. Snuck up from behind my garden and plugged that bugger! He was nearly 30'' around!!!  JABA the chuck!!

Got my first chuck of the season yesterday. :D
140 yds. with my 280 Handi using 140gr. factory Remington ammo.
Hit him in the ribs and just about folded him in half... wasn't pretty. :o

Bulletstuffer- That little .410 is VERY accurate out to 50 yards, my self imposed limit. As our neighborhood gets more inhabited with houses and walkers I find myself more comfortable with the no ricochet soft lead .410 slug. That being said, I recently picked up some 120 grain Remington hollow points for the 7mm-08 Handi Rifle I'm putting together and Spanky just provided some inspiration.... 8) ...Scott B.

Got my second one of the year two weekends ago at our local shooting range.  Little buggers are making swiss cheese of the berm.  I had just switched guns shooting and looked up and there one was right at the 100 yard berm.  Took him through the head with the gun I had in hand- Thompson/Center Omega .50 caliber shooting 200 grain SST powered by 100 grains of loose 777 powder!  That was fun!  I was surprised that it did not blow the head apart; just bugged out the eyeballs.

Thought I'd post a pic of #6 of the year, 115 yards with the .22WMR Sportster:

The soy beans are sprouting, and the woodchucks can't resist them.....should be fun hunting the next couple weeks!

This one has been eluding me for awhile, so I broke out the .22-250. No wind, solid rest, statue-like target staring my way at 315 paces...DRT

My longest shot to date, from the old picnic table with a homemade rest and cheap ammo...

I'm only now beginning to appreciate the range of this bean-field rifle... 8)

If you haven't tried one yet, before they get too big n gnarly they are pretty tasty. But the others go in my bear bait barrel.

Man i hate to hear that. Invasives like the coyote are just wreaking havok on about everything, cept other invasives like the armadillo ::)

As a kid i remember chucks everywhere when we visited Pennsylvania and N.Y.. They'd be on the side of the highways munching grass all the way south till you hit southern Virginia at the N.C. line and they were gone. Took 30 years but i saw my 2nd roadside chuck here in Charlotte this year. We finally got woodchucks and i couldn't be happier, troublesome critters or not. Hope all our new coyotes that have also showed up don't eat em all.  J

#10 woodchuck, 125 yards with the .22-250:

Right now the soy beans are just the right height to lure them out but provide no cover. Another couple of weeks growth will make the hunting tougher. Been seeing quite a few rabbits. a few turkeys and deer....no coyotes. I'm sure they are around somewhere.

#11 woodchuck @ 110 yards with the .22-250, no photo-op due to a rainy day and the chuck was missing everything from the ears forward... :( ...Saw three others out feeding, they like rainy days!
