What is the difference between a handgun scope and a scout rifle scope?


I have a ruger mini14 with a scout scope mount on it and have several handgun scopes on hand, but I am wondering what is the difference between the two.. with the handgun scope installed I am having a little hard time getting a clear sight picture even though the eye releafe is good
 Would a scout style scope make it easier to get a good sight picture?

Never used a "Scout Specific" scope, but plenty of handgun and regular scopes.  I think the real difference for any forward mounted scope, whether on a rifle or handgun is eye relief.  Not all pistol / scout scopes are the same.  Measuring the distance between your eye and the scope you want to use, as mounted, in shooting position, is important.  Higher magnification powers lessen FOV, and make proper eye relief even more important to avoid the dreaded "blackout" when looking thru a scope.  Most manufacturers list the optimal eye relief for the glass they make, making it easier to choose the right one for your specific need.

I've used the Weaver 2x28 pistol scope in a scout mounted position, it worked fine, just not my cup O' tea. As Larry said, the eye relief range spec from the mfr will tell if it will work for you or not, spec for the Weaver is 9-17".

I use a leupold 2.5x scout scope on my Ruger #1 in 4570.  I think the difference is the amount of eye releif.  The LSS needs 9-13 inches.  A handgun scope needs, I think, around 18 to 21 inches. I could be wrong though..

I put a simmons 2-6 handgun on my ruger mini14 and sighted it in to day. It worked ok better then iron sights.

A long eye relief pistol scope will work as a scout scope but wont have as much field of view as a intermediate eye relief scout scope and eye postion behind the scope will be more critical on a pistol scope. Scout setups were never my cup a tea either. Ive found a good 1x4 mounted conventionaly is just as fast. But then i havent given them a real fair shake. Maybe if a guy worked with one for a while its benifits would show a bit more. But bottom line is that a 1x4 set on 1x is plenty fast for any brush work.
