.270 ported barrel
« on: May 23, 2013, 01:13:26 AM »
saw one of these and after some research looks like it was a factory offereing. Had a standard 270 with less than steller accuracy. Anyone have any experience with this one. How much did the ported barrel cut down on recoil.

A friend of mine has one,a factory unit from around 10 years ago.Has been fairly accurate 3 deer so far.He did make the mistake of using a misplaced coat as a rest and set it on fire from the muzzle blast!! They are considerably louder than a nonported.

I shot one of these on the factory range in Gardner.  I'm sure the ported barrel cut down on recoil.  Unfortunately the benefits gained in reduced recoil was lost in the muzzle blast.  I shot a group out of the rifle and it was all I could do to ignore the muzzle blast.  I would never own one.

I have a 30-06 UltraComp, I believe they were made in .270 also. I love mine, it is very accurate and the compensator cuts down on recoil considerably. Kicks about like a 30-30. They are extremely loud, there was even a warning sheet included with the rifle about it. I fired mine just once without hearing protection and I thought my ears were going to bleed! I don't notice the muzzle blast when shooting from a bench. It's one Handi I would never sell.
I have more guns than I need, but not as many as I want.

The Ultracomp was available in 270 and 30-06 1997-2003, I have had had a couple of each, still have one of each, the 270UCs shoots great, but better be wearing your ears, anyone near you too! You can always remove the comp and shoot it with just a thread protector, much easier on fellow shooters.  ;D

I guess I'm bigoted, blind, lost, old and stupid, but it is beyond me why anyone would want a ported .270.  I've seen them on as dumb things as .223s and .357s.  Now if it were on one of the monsters Ty, Tim, Jason and others shoot, I could understand it, but on a .270, ...what for?  More muzzle blast? ???  The .270 only kills in one direction.

Pete, I thought the same thing the first time I shot my .270 uc. Was one of those deals I couldn't pass it up and can't pass a good handi deal whether I "need" it or that it makes no sense. All that said,  mine will average .7" groups. Now for the answer,my 8 year old daughter loves it. She shoots the heck out of it. She uses plugs and muffs. She's debating between it and her maxi for deer. Was thinking about selling it but that is out the window. Just my experience for what it's worth

The big draw back for me would be having to hunt with hearing protection.  I wouldn't like that.

I love mine , off sand bags it shoots like a BR rifle , just a slight slide back , no real recoil to speak of and as I always use both plugs & muffs so it sounds ok to me .  ;)

To each their own.  I've told this story before.  A friend and neighbor has his '06 ported.  He said "It blew the empty beer cans off the shelf in my coop." (deer blind).  He took it back to his gunsmith and had it cut and re-crowned.

Stimpy, I've got to believe that rifle would shoot just as well off the bench without the brake.  As I said before, it's a matter of choice.  I don't have anything with enough recoil, including the .45-70, to even get me thinking about it.
