Well gentlemen, got 4 days left of school and I am done. Official retirement date June 1. Don't know whether to rejoice or cry, kinda got mixed emotions. Part of the issue is that they are closing my Automotive program due to budget cuts. A lot of good kids will be affected. Had an Autoskills team that won second place in State competition this year and 16 out of 18 that tested for the competition qualified. So, I am leaving on a positive note.

Original question to those more experienced is..................how does it (retirement) affect the disease?

Well, ... it's tuff!

Now that you have all the time in the world to shoot and polish you weapons

you can find the reloading parts to make ammo!

Then you buy a new truck

and cant afford new guns!!

but on the bright side,
you can sit in the hammok all day and sip lemonaid, enjoying the 85 degree days (unless you live way up north and haven't jump started spring yet)
so my days are like this,
get up and eat
post breakfast nap
snack
mid morning nap
pre lunch nap
lunch
post lunch nap
snack
mid afternoon nap
pre dinner nap
dinner
post dinner nap
hockey game
snack
bed time finely, whew what a day i'm having

So the retirement only slowed down my handi diesease but it never, never goes away.

Retirement created the sickness for me, that's when I really got started!

Retirement is either a state of mind or a state of being. If you let it be a state of being you will be dead in a year. If you maintain your state of mind (Handiholicism) you will continue to never have enough handi rifle projects or the time to develop and use them. Sorry

Retired from the career job and ramped up my contracting business... now I have ten or twelve Handi projects on the go... I am getting good at juggling.

Bobby, I don't know where I ever found the time to work. I'm busier now than I ever have been. All the projects that got shoved under the rug for years are now here to do. I love it

I work every day.....for myself. Each day that passes, something about our home, environment, hobbies etc. is improved. Things are getting in order and earlier ideas and dreams become fact. There's no time clock. You work your own pace, and you save money in the long run. I should mention...the pay sucks.

Enjoy your retirement. I think it comes at a good time. We're struggling here to keep our Engadine Consolidated Schools going. I don't understand what is wrong with our society. Athletes and celebrities get paid the millions we spend on entertainment while the real foundation of our country....our schools..... go broke. Patty and I no longer have kids in school, yet we support our school in every way we can.....including voting "Yes" on millage and supporting fund raisers. We never buy the fruit, candy, etc. the kids sell to support a class trip, prom, etc. We give a cash donation instead. That way the school gets 100% and not just a tiny portion and we're not stuck with something we don't really want.

You're a man of God. Pray for guidance and inspiration. You'll get it. Reap what you sow. Help others and you'll be helped. I'm considering retiring, alot older than you and wondered about the same thing. So the guidance I got was to sell what I really didn't use for an honest price to those with less than I, and treasure the rest.

Made several new friends, maybe hunting pardners, and discovered alot of folks sorta like me. More humility and gratitude also.

Oh, and I realized it's more fun to be a grand old man than a grouchy one. I'll be keepin' that in mind.

Well Bobby, This is Bobby... LOL... Anyway, congrats on the upcoming retirement. I retired effective 1 February this year. I figured 2 full careers was enough. 20 years USMC and 21 years as a LEO. It seems that I have worked more since I retired than while I was working. We finally got the house sold and moved 100 miles away. Just now finished and getting settled in. I had 7 Handis when I retired. I now have 9 with another still coming in. Just stay active, my friend. I remember what my grandmother told me when I was 5 years old. Didn't really understand it then, but it is quite fitting now. She said, "Son, Don't ever Stop! First you set down, then you lay down, then they carry you out!" Pretty good advice I believe.

I will have to monitor this closely, I go out on Feb 1 of next year. I already know the pay will suck. I will have a pallet of tile to put down, some new windows, and need new siding on the house. I figure two years worth of Honey-do's if I go pretty steady.

I intend to fish and golf as much as possible. My hunting partner died several years ago, but maybe with time I can renew some old friendships, or find some other old fart that can tolerate me. Whatever comes, we'll just have to deal with it.

But--I found that after I had been retired for awhile, I was so "tired" that I was about ready to go back to work full-time just to get rested up!!

Been retired for 6 years now. I find that I spend more time reloading for, and at the range and playing with my Handis. So I would venture a guess and say that the obsession just gets worse. I think I accumulated quite a "few" more Handis than I had before, I retired, this not counting the additional barrels.

I agree with nanuk, you got to keep busy, or your wife will find something for you to do.

Bob... that's a good thing as long as you don't put "what's good" over "what's better." It is easy to forget... many in ministry have sacrificed their own families for the church... and God has never called anyone to that. So, keep it all in balance and enjoy this new stage of life. Giving is definitely better than receiving... and you appear to be a "giver."

That's quite a milestone, Bobby. Congratulations.

It's a shame that some don't understand that people who learn to DO STUFF get jobs and can make a decent living but you've done good in that endeavor - and retirement will likely leave you looking for more good to do.

As for the affliction - there are worse things you could spend your time and attention on. Enjoy it.

You are very lucky rev to be leaving on a high note. I was able to hang it up while I was on my peak game as well. Sorry to say that I watched a couple of colleagues go into a downhill spiral prior to retirement -- a very sad thing to watch. Like watching a slow-motion train wreck.

Several people on here have already told you that they work more after retiring than they did while they held down their regular job. Believe me, they are not kidding. It is absolutely true.

In the old days a man could always go out to the barn when he detected that he was under his wife's feet a bit too much. Unfortunately most of us don't have a barn anymore. This is where the workshed comes in. If you don't have one, you better get one. "Togetherness" is a great thing, but it can be overdone and you not even realize it.

The list of projects that you need to do, will NEVER end. Just do as many as you can, but don't forget to play! Handiholics, you know what I mean!

Congratulations on your retirement and enjoy every day of it.

Bobby....Build a barn.....it works......I've got one. Your can put anything in there....Auto shop included. My reloading room and shop are there as are some of my dogs, horses, tack room, meat processing room, garden equipment, mowers, chain saws, trimmers, rototillers, tractors, truck and van, etc. etc. I can always find an excuse to escape to the barn....in fact, I have an excuse hand picked for today

Rev, Congrats on your upcoming retirement!!! Just one retiree to another, I did not become a ''Handiholic'' until After I retired. I do not think it it gets better, what can I say. Enjoy your retirement and pastoring the church, we alway need good pastors, now more than ever. Y'all take care, John.
