Hornet to KHornet (KEHornet?)
« on: May 23, 2013, 05:36:40 AM »
I have a 22 Hornet that I would like to try reaming to a KHornet. I would appreciate any suggestions or tips about doing it myself or who would be a good candidate to have do it. Is it customary to ream the dies to a KHornet with the same reamer so they match or isn't that something that is normally done?  I just recently read about a KEHornet. Any thoughts?

When a boot is on your throat does it matter if is the right boot or left boot?

Doing a K is a simple 10 min job by hand , all you need is a good cutting oil and a " T " style tap handle  Once you have the new chamber cut just shoot standard Hornet rounds to fire-form them for the new case . There are a few different case designs for the K , but none are so far off that any K-Hornet die will work to load them .

About 25 barrels have been done here by members with the GBO K-hornet reamer, it works great, see the GBO reamer sticky, there's some die discussion there.  ;) Reamer is a Clymer 1110, 35º shoulder.

Prolly goes without saying but for anyone thinking of reaming there dies with a chamber reamer to match there ( new ) chamber.   It will not work for at least 2 reasons, First sizing dies are hardened and you would damage the reamer trying to force it to cut the hard die steel and second the sizing die must be undersize to the dimension of the chamber or else you would never be able to chamber your brass .
As mentioned there are several versions of the K Hornet and you need the correct die with the same sholder angle as the chamber reamer has.

After reading the sticky I see that reaming a stainless barrel isn't an option, but I'll put the idea on the back burner just in case a likely candidate comes down the pike.
