I had a drill bit break off in the vent today. I don't know what to do. Any ideas. To make things worse my father put a piece of carbide steel in the vent to try and drive the broken bit out. It barely was poked through the bore and he though he could drive it out. Well its not working so I turned it in to a boat anchor. Seriously. It was a thunder mug machined from solid 6-3/4" diameter bar stock.
Now there's a piece of carbide steel stuck in the vent and its below the surface and it wont come out. Before he tried his idea I burnt through two carbide bits trying to drill out the broken bit and broke another one of them bits off in the vent. So theres two pieces of carbide on top of a regular broken drill bit.
You can laugh.

Yes, EDM.  Broken drills are a simple procedure for the process and if you are in any kind of a manufacturing area, there should be several places around that can do it (try drill disintegrators.)  If you can't find a listing in the Yellow Pages, try calling a few machine shops and ask who they use for removing stuck drills.

Could we use a vent liner now?
Could we use a steel bolt as the vent liner?
How safe are vent liners?
Im considering a bolt. Then re bore the barrel to smooth over the protrusion and do the same to the outside of the barrel.  Can you add JB Weld to the threads?

 Of course use a vent liner.  I don't know how safe they are, but most original guns had them made of copper, that has to mean something.   Look in the front of of one  f you AOP plan books and you will find a picture of a vent liner.

Don't JB Weld, it is unnecessary. If you do anything put high temp anti seize grease on the threads.  The orignals wer meant to be removed when the hole eroded.
